Topic Dog Boards / General / Suitable waterproof dog coats for BIG dogs
- By suejaw Date 28.11.10 18:05 UTC
I've been mooching through some online pages and can't find anything of a decent price for what i'm looking for.

My dog don't feel the cold, but in the wet it would be nice to bring them back into the house a little drier than they currently are. Are there any good, just normal waterproof coats which also cover the under belly too? I don't need fleece or anything which add's warmth to them really. High Viz would be awesome, but not essential. Most of the coats are coming in at a silly price or have added bulk for warmth which again puts prices up.

I was hoping CountryMun would have something as they are local and could try theirs on, but they don't have anything which has the underbelly coverage.

Have you tried Gillrugs?
- By suejaw Date 28.11.10 19:06 UTC
Never heard of them, tried google and their website won't connect. Links below it say that they went out of business back in 2005 and then re-started again, but their website won't open :-(
- By mastifflover Date 28.11.10 19:16 UTC
I could't find a hi-viz vest that would fit Buster, so got a cheap one from a market for £4 (human adult sized!) and altered it on the sewing machine :) It's not waterproof, but helps keeps the worst of the rain out and as it was altered to fit him, all his underside is covered apart form his willy area but if you have gilries you wouldn't need to leave a space for that bit.

But sorry, no links for places that do large dog coats.
- By suejaw Date 28.11.10 19:20 UTC
ML, Thanks, but not a dab hand at sewing, useless would be the best response to that, even to sew a button on is an ordeal for me!! :-D

Thank you anyway.. Psst, don't own a sewing machine and wouldn't even know where to start on one either ;-)
- By mastifflover Date 28.11.10 19:26 UTC

> even to sew a button on is an ordeal for me!!

LOL, making human clothing fit a dog is not going to appeal then! :-D

Best of luck on your search.

Have you tried Robinsons leisure? its a horse supplies shop but they do a range for dogs, i've got some chilli cheeta coats for £9 for my giant breed and the quality is very good. They do mail order and there are other coat styles available.
- By peppe [gb] Date 28.11.10 20:25 UTC
What size are you looking for, Ingatestone Saddlery sell dog coats got a waterproof one for just under £9 and our local kennels is also selling them for around £11 could have a look for you.
- By suejaw Date 28.11.10 20:47 UTC
Need themto fit a Bernese.
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 28.11.10 21:07 UTC
I got a waterproof all in one (inc. legs) for one of the GSD's from the Overhill stand at a show. It would've been ideal but was too narrow between the front legs so best to be able to try before you buy.
- By suejaw Date 28.11.10 21:10 UTC
Was looking at the leg ones, and can just imagine the cuffuffle of trying to put those on my boys and then take them off again.. Deep joy!!! lol.. GSD'S seem to be more laid back in accepting things compared the the Berns, don't you think? Or are my boys the exception?
- By suejaw Date 28.11.10 21:29 UTC
Peppe,

They don't do what I'm looking for there, or on Robinsons's either.
http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/dog-supplies/dog-care/dog-coats/all-weather-dog-coats/danish-design-coat-waterproof-ebony.html
This is what I'm looking for without the thermal lining and without that silly price tag, nearly £40 is not really a sane price for a bit of waterproof material, i'm not looking for gortex or hyvent.. lol
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 28.11.10 21:32 UTC
Bramble has a Masta one - Hi vis yellow with a thin fleece lining - she hates it though but it keeps her dry. Its a 28" one so I would think your boys will need a 30" and 28" is the biggest. greyhound mega store do on in size 30" for all breeds and so do pet planet. Expect looks of disgust from the dogs though :-D

I think I need to get one for Teasel if the snow keeps up - I need one to keep her tummy dry though as her legs are so short. Treacle loves her dog coat - she is always cold - single coat :-)
- By Lisakom [gb] Date 28.11.10 21:37 UTC
Sue...try here..http://www.dormercrafts.co.uk/....have a look at the dog coats gallery and see if you recognise one of the models ;)
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 28.11.10 22:06 UTC
Sue I think putting coats on more than 1 dog for a walk would be a performance whatever the breed! At our previous house I used to hose 9 dogs down after every walk in the winter then they laid on vetbeds to dry off. I'm quite glad the days of living next to muddy bridle paths are over.
- By cb87 [gb] Date 28.11.10 22:31 UTC
there is an all-in-one coat here, it isnt hi-vis though, but it does go upto a size 30" http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/dog-supplies/dog-care/dog-coats/showerproof-dog-coats/trouser-suit-red-12in-30cm.html

Sorry to change topic Sue and good luck in finding a coat, but do people realy use the ear protectors 'sequined' on their poor dogs. Best laugh of the day imagining our two with them on at feeding time.
- By Noora Date 28.11.10 22:56 UTC
Have you got a blaster?
As that is what we do after our muddy walks, few minutes play with the blaster and they come in reasonably dry and clean :)
Time wise, putting on and taking off coats and drying/washing other care(of the coats) I would think would be the same as blasting two dogs after the walk?
You would of course need a dry place to do it in, I use our garage...

>do people realy use the ear protectors 'sequined' on their poor dogs. Best laugh of the day imagining our two with them on at feeding time.

I'm with you Lacy - I thought I'd wandered into an alternative reality and fair spat my tea over the keyboard.

Each to his own I suppose but some of these poor mites look soooo undignified in their 'Nana hats' :)
- By suejaw Date 28.11.10 23:18 UTC
I do have a blaster but its a nightmare trying to do both the dogs. With just a normal coat which protects their chest area its easier for them to walk into the house after a quick rub down of their feet and legs. I used to have a normal waterproof coat for my eldest, but as it was lined he sweated really badly in it, it was expensive and his chest always took the brunt of the mud!!! It lived until a certain yellow puppy came along and took a tasteful liking to it ;-) It really is more the mud they pick up than the wet.
Maybe i'll just go for a lined expensive one then.. hmmmm...They do the light weight waterproof ones without chest coverage, with it and it ends up with some lining in it..
- By claire_41 [gb] Date 29.11.10 08:45 UTC
have you tried any of the ancol products ? not sure on sizes but i know they do them to cover under belly too.

Here you go, BIG dog coats with underbelly covers :D they even come in high-vis :D
- By peppe [gb] Date 29.11.10 10:15 UTC
Let me know what length you want measure from neck to tail, mine goes over the end of the tail and depth and I will have a look for you.
- By ClaireyS Date 29.11.10 10:38 UTC
all of mine have these http://www.equafleece.co.uk/store/dog_jumpers.html I orignally got them to keep the boys warm in the car after a canix/bikejoring event or a trip to the beach but they are great for going out when its wet, they are totally waterproof and keep legs, chest and tummy dry.  They are breathable too so the dogs dont overheat. I too have a blaster but find it much easier just to take the dogs coats off, and put them on the radiator, they dry really quick.  I dont know about your dogs but if mine get wet, even if I blast them off they still stay soggy for hours afterwards.

They are quite expensive, but totally worth it.
- By Pedlee Date 29.11.10 10:55 UTC
I'd go for an Equafleece jumper as well. I use them for after walks once I've hosed down the muddy dogs, and after hydrotherapy, and when it's really cold the Dobes have them to go out in.

There are these (http://www.hotterdog.co.uk/store/dog_jumper.html) which I think are slightly cheaper.
- By qwerty Date 29.11.10 11:55 UTC
Dont know whether these will fit or what you are after but i get all my dog coats from here...  [url=http://www.equestrianclearance.com/]
- By suejaw Date 29.11.10 13:12 UTC
AM,

That website is very good and what they sell in dog coats is kind of what i'm looking for, its just the chest covering is not very wide and with dogs with wide chests and lots of fur that wouldn't work. See my dilemma? lol
- By suejaw Date 29.11.10 13:14 UTC
Claire, I may just have to go made to order. Those fleece ones I may just end up with and as I do like mine to swim at times these may just be the ticket.
- By ClaireyS Date 29.11.10 13:28 UTC
They are good for all year round really, think thats why I was happy to spend the money.  We also use them in the Summer if they are sleeping out in the caravan awning because it can get really chilly at night, especially when they are used to sleeping in a centrally heated house.

The lady who runs the company is great, I phoned up to order a coat for Jack, it was late October and we were camping at a canix event in Cumbria, I called up on the Wednesday morning and she was just in the process of cutting the material ..... it arrived through my letter box the following morning :)  I think Jack was more pleased than me, he wore it all weekend .... must admit the purple is a little bit girly for him
- By suejaw Date 29.11.10 13:31 UTC
Will call them shortly, wonder if they'll fit the one with tree truck legs ;-)

Note to self, don't leave any coats laying about unless you want them chewed
- By mastifflover Date 29.11.10 14:24 UTC

> wonder if they'll fit the one with tree truck legs

LOL, can't believe I'd forgotton about the Matalan pac-a-mac. Sixe L/XL (for adult humans), cost about £5 - great for water/mud-proofing the front end of a dog :) Nice wide arms that would fit the largest dogs front legs in, with a draw-string waist for a custom fit :-D
- By Louise Badcock [jo] Date 29.11.10 15:44 UTC
We have GD and we went to a greyhound /saddlery man who makes coats for greyhounds and horses. He made up 3 perfectly fitting coats one of which was waterproof.
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 29.11.10 18:07 UTC
The pak a mak looks like it would keep the dog fairly clean & dry underneath. I got our Rottie a bright yellow Equafleece but shrunk it in the wash.
- By suejaw Date 29.11.10 18:24 UTC
Think i'll try these first then, cheap as chips... The Equafleece do look good, but now concerned that they may shrink in the wash now that WS has mentioned that.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 29.11.10 21:03 UTC
I'd rather they looked a little silly for 5 minutes at feeding time than had to wash everyone's ears afterwards, or if I didn't wash the ears, have caked food or chewed up ears as another dog tried to chew the caked food. We don't need them now we feed dry food, but when I used to feed wet food they came in jolly handy!

I havent shrunk mine yet and they are always in the wash.
- By suejaw Date 29.11.10 22:19 UTC
Think i've found what i'm looking for at a reasonable priceish...Just got to measure them and hope for the best.. Very interesting links people and the Equafleece is still on the list..

Buster has short fur, but as a pup, his ears dangled into his food. A good wipe over afterwards never removed all the caked in tripe, so I ended up spending ages with a brush, brushing it all out of the ends of his ears.
In the end I resorted to tying a tea-towel around his head to keep his ears out of the way, he didn't mind the fact he lookled like a 'granny with a scarf on her head' and it saved loads of hassel :) Didn't know you could get specially designed 'ear-savers'.
Ah well, Bust has grown into his ears now and they don't dangle in his food anymore, but can definately see why people use the 'ear-savers' on thier dogs .
- By ClaireyS Date 30.11.10 05:46 UTC
Our afghans used to wear them otherwise they would chew their ears as they ate their food, in those days we called them snoods ......

Another vote for gillrugs here.
I have a large long haired breed and buy water proof coats with tummy protectors.
I've been really pleased with the quality.

Sue this is a terrible picture but I had a leaflet through from Hyperdrug which has a waterproof nylon dog coat.  It has a splashguard chest protector and might be worth a look.

They seem to have a large range of different coats so hopefully you'll find something suitable.
