Hi guys,

My girl had her scan on thursday day 31 and 4 puppies were seen:) so very very happy.  My vet gave me two bottles of Panacur and was instructed to give her the wormer every day from day 40 until she whelps, now she was wormed with Drontal whilst in season.  My question is, the stud owner has said not to give this as she will be already be covered, she said that she has lost puppies because of Panacur???? im in a dilema, do I listen to my vet or my stud owner and return the two bottles costing a hefty £49.00??? any advise please.

even tho your girl was wormed before mating she will still get worms while shes pregnant its the hormone change that bring the larva out ,i used it on my girl last time and after talking with my vet i think i will use it again but not 100% sure yet!

Listen to your vet.

Although Drontal is an effective wormer it only kills worms that are currently within the gut. A week later a dog can have reinfected itself (eating carrion or simply through grooming) and the worms developing. On top of that, pregnancy hormones activate encysted worms that have left the gut and entered the body tissue. These are the ones that will infect the developing puppies so that they're born with worms, and will be continually infected when they suckle from the bitch. Worming with Panacur during pregnancy means the puppies are born with far fewer worms and so will thrive better.

Go with your vet!  Please.  :-)

But if you need any more Panacur, I can tell you where to get it at half the price.  Have used Panacur suspension for many years, but even my vet knows why I don't buy from him!

My adult dogs get Drontal every 6 months (I'm not in an area where I consider that it needs to be done more frequently.)  But the others are right in reminding you that pregnancy hormones are going to have your bitch full of worms if you don't treat her from day 40.  Your vet has given you very sound advice, and Panacur is the only wormer in the UK that is actually licensed for use on pregnant bitches.  Your vet should have told you to dose your girl from day 40 until 2 days post whelping.

Check the correct dose on the box.  As a pregnant bitch gets a quarter of a normal adult dose.  And dosing her correctly, means that your pups are born 98% worm free - so all they need to do is thrive.  :-)   So much better than having a heavy worm burden to contend with.

The stud dog owner is wrong telling you that your bitch is already covered, and should really know about encysted worms if she has bred litters herself.  I have used Panacur on pregnant bitches for many years, and on very tiny breeds - I have never had a problem.

Please don't listen to a stud dog owner who doesn't know about encysted worms.  Listen to your vet.  (But don't buy from him next time!)  :-)  :-)

Use the Panacur as directed by your vet. If in doubt then do a search on the internet to find out why it is so important to worm during pregnancy. The lifecycle of worms is truly fascinating ... though maybe not bed time reading :-O

My bitch was wormed with Panacur from day 40 even though she had been wormed before hand with no ill effects to either mum or pups and no worms seen either. Go with the advice of the vet, but buy it cheaper.

I worm my bitch as soon as she comes in season with Drontal plus and not again until after the pups are born, pups are wormed with Drontal, we've never had worms.

We used Panacur a few years ago and nearly lost a whole litter due to really bad s&d (no worms) they all ended up in the vets for 3 days, so have never used it again.

sharon did they become ill from mum having it from 40days or when it was time to worm pups from 2weeks old? xx
- By SharonM Date 28.11.10 00:00 UTC
We have never wormed a pregnant bitch, my vet advises against putting chemicals into the dogs when pregnant, but when the pups were wormed at 2 weeks it was a mass explosion of s & d.

I have often heard of pups having a reaction when mum has not been treated during pregnancy.  Which is natural, as they will be full of worms.  When mum is having Panacur while pregnant, you will find that pups are already accustomed to it before birth.  And, of course, they will not be full of worms.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.11.10 08:22 UTC
Exactly right, Jean. The puppies are more likely to have a strong reaction to having a massive worm burden (because they were badly infested in the worm) treated than if the mum was wormed properly during pregnancy.

I probably err on the side of caution.  I start my 40 days from the day of the last tie.

If you only need Panacur, there is nothing extra to pay, as they don't charge P&P on wormers.

I have always wormed before mating and then again once pups are born with Drontal.  Have never had any problems.  The only problems I have had is when I wormed with Panacur from day 40.  Six out of eight pups were born dead and it was touch and go with the other two for a few days.  Obviously on my quest for answers I discovered a lot of breeders who will not worm a bitch in pregnancy.  One lost an entire litter of 12 the first time she did it.  All stillborn.  Everyone has different experiences and as mine have been bad I won't ever worm during pregnancy again.

But weren't you worried, knowing that pups would be absolutely full of worms while in the womb?
- By Bex72 [gb] Date 28.11.10 11:44 UTC
It has never been a worry for me I must admit.  Mum is wormed again once pups are born and then they are wormed from 2 weeks of age.  In all the litters I have bred none have ever had worms so it has never been a concern to me.

> Everyone has different experiences

I have been worming the bitches in whelp with Panacur for 6 generations (16 litters) and never had a problem.  Never had a still birth until a long labour with our Kizi where we had two, and again one other still born in another litter, so just the statistical norm and easily attributable to a difficult labour.

I  had a bad reaction on the second worming at 5 weeks (as it is advised to do in the instructions on the labelled bottles, ie 2, 5 and 8 weeks).

I had been told by vet when they dispensed it in unmarked bottles on earlier litters to worm at 3 and 8 weeks, I returned to worming the pups twice as Mum had already been done through pregnancy, and no issues since.  I now do them at 3 weeks, and 7 weeks and instruct owners to do again at 11 weeks, which will fit in between the vaccinations, so that pups don't get everything at once.

sorry i forgot to say thankyou jean for the link :) xx

I have had very bad reactions with puppies at 5 weeks as well - never known why.    Panacur people don't seem to know why either.    It seems fine with adult dogs and in whelp bitches.
