Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Experience on feeding Pro Plan?

I have 4 dogs and until recently they were all fed on Bakers. My lab lost a lot of weight recently due to being poorly (he is better now), and so we changed him onto Royal Canin. Since changing his food he looks so much better, his coat is shinier, he has more energy and in general just seems better than ever. (and he produces less waste!). I am happy for him to remain on RC but I want to change the others to a better food too.

We have tried other foods including CSJ but 2 out of the 3 wont touch it and I dont want to feed raw.

I cant really afford to feed all 4 RC, I know they would eat less than they would of Bakers as it is better quality but it still would be very expensive. I have spent hours studying nutrional info of various foods and have found the Pro plan is very similar to RC but about £10 a bag less so I was wondering if anyone had any experiance with the food (Good or Bad) before I try it out.

Hi i have never fed a cheaper complete food until i tried Burgess Supadog Adult Dog Sensitive Lamb and Rice for my older house dogs. the other dogs that are being shown are fed either pro plan or royal canin, both are about the same in my opinion very good. i did quite alot of research to find a cheaper feed for our house dogs and the burgess came out the best, with main ingredient being lamb. the house dogs have been on this now for about 5 months, and they are in lovley condition and the poos are really very small in fact tiny for GSD's. i must admit they always have half a tin of butchers tripe in it as well. i have looked at the rest of the range of burgess food and it really looks rubbish. hope this helps

Mine is raw fed but this link maybe of help to chose if you haven't seen it before, Burgess comes very low down on the grading.

Have seen that site, but lots of other foods come low down on its grading too, such as CSJ and Autarky.

You will find a great many people supporting CSJ wherever you go; not for its grading on there, but for its genuine and accountable results for many owners & dogs over the years...
Proof of the pudding perhaps.

The dog food analysis review only got one review, just to clarify the comment on Burgess.

However, until I changed to Fish4Dogs, I had all the toys on Royal Canin mini for many years.  (Got a little out of my means when I ordered 2 sacks early this year - and at breeders prices I was charged just over £83 for 2 sacks of mini junior)

My Border Collie boy had the worst sensitive tummy I have ever known in a dog.  I bought a small bag of every kind of sensitive complete that I could find (this was over 5 years ago.)

I didn't look at price, just tried whatever was available, and all price ranges.  The Pro plan went straight through him.  The only one that hit the spot was the Burgess Supadog sensitive that you have mentioned.  Whatever people say about what foods are good or bad, at the end of the day, it has to suit the dog.

All my dogs get a little wet added to their dry food, and I often use the Butcher's loaf mentioned.  But for my BC boy, his wet was Chappie, and it suits him really, really well.  Everyone mentions the gloss on his coat.  So, at the end of the day, it has to be what suits your dog.  I agree that you are not going to get much nutrition with Bakers, but I would definitely tell you that you have nothing to lose by trying Burgess.

I understand it only has one review but it does give the ingredients which should be considered, my husband is an electrician in a chicken factory and i know exactly what 'meal' means and its not something i'd be feeding, which probably prompted us to go raw.
But thats just my thoughts :)

I've fed pro plan for 7 years and wouldn't change to anything else.  Dogs have always been in great condition with glossy coats.  If you buy from shows its cheap as well.

Hi I used to feed pro plan and had good results with my dogs on it. Always looked in good condition etc also raised a litter of pups on it too and they were all in top condition and never had any tummy troubles. I have now changed over to fish 4 dogs as i preferred the ingredients to the pro plan and to be honest it is cheaper for me to feed with better ingredients... I am about to raise a litter on fish 4 dogs in about 10 days so hopefully will have good results

Hi Emz77, my puppy came from a litter raised on fish4dogs and my breeder would recommend it.

Something you may want to consider doing for your owners is arranging a bulk order using the large delivery discounts that fish 4dogs have.  We puppy owners all banded together to get great savings on extra bags of puppy food and treats.  The discount was fantastic and well worth it.  We paid and collected at the same time as we picked up the puppies but you could ask for payment in advance if you were worried you might get stuck with it.  However at those discounts you could sell it on eBay for profit!

Just a thought and apologies to the OP for going off topic. :)

Have you become a royal canin breeder member? The food (i think) is cheaper than pet shops & it's delivered for free aswell.

http://www.gjwtitmuss.co.uk  does alot of offers on dog food & some have free delivery, this is where i get my pro plan from

Thanks for the link, I feed RC and Pro plan and both are much cheaper. Will use them when we need some more!
