Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Do you always scan after whelping?

I'm curious as to how many people have their girls scanned after whelping to check that everything is clear inside as I always do it for the added peace of mind but the only 3 other people I know who have had litters don't. One said that she thinks it is a waste of money but I would rather pay the £70 and be assured that things are ok.

i didn't with my bitch as I could feel each pup as it was coming down the uterine horns and counted each placenta.... so I could feel when my bitch was empty and how her body language changed when she was done. But that was just my experience and obviously having a short coated large breed it must be easier than having a double coated breed?

Never even been offered the opportunity, though did scan one once that had delivered a dead pup but vet had been sure they saw a heart beat so she was scanned and x-rayed to check.

Never have done, I just feel. I don't like taking newly whelped bitches to the vet where there may be dogs with kennel cough etc. £70 for a scan though? Wow. We pay about £25 at the vet's.

No, but I had an injection of oxytocin the morning after (she whelped during an evening) to be sure there were no retained afterbirths.

It must just be me being over-cautious. Even if I know there are no pups left I always take her. We either go half an hr before surgery opens or half an hr after it closes depending on when she finishes and always in the back door to avoid other animals. I don't take the pups as they stay at home with hubby and the heat-pad as we only live 2 mins from our vets so are there and back in half an hr. I think I may give it a miss this time unless I think there is a problem.

Nope and have never done any of the above.

Wow!! sleepwhatsleep! I only pay £28.00 for a scan. some of our vet tell us what they see, some will only confirm pregnance. I do it to make sure there is more than one.
I had a bitch that mated, all sighn's, swelling everthing. vet said all looks well, scan shown no pups in the swollen womb. Can you imagine all the problems it could have caused if she hadn't been scanned.

I don't have them scanned after, as the others have said an injection can do the trick if necessary. I do try to count all the afterbirths. I hope when I felt her tummy as Sammies carry them very high. That I would feel a retained pup. I always take her for a check up the morning after also the pups. We don't go in the main surgery. They enter us the back way.

This is my girls first litter. I decided i wanted her scanned just for confirmation and to hopefully see more than one pup.My own vet is not experianced in scannin gso i found a breeder 40 miles away who scans at home. She is a GP so that helps as well.My girl was calm because she was not in a vets surgery and stood there good as gold. She picked up 5 sacs so possibly is more. Also saw heartbeats. She only charged £20 which was great. I think it is very much a personal thing. Some like to scan others dont especially if you are experianced  and dont need a scan to tell you dog is in pup. It made my day lol

I have my own scanner, but I don't scan after whelping, I feel their tummies but can normally tell when they have finished.
