Topic Dog Boards / General / gsd service dog killed in error

Just cannot believe that a dog can be killed in error, what a shock. A hero service dog, who returned to the States with his handler, escaped. The owner searched for him but to no avail and that night was on the internet and tried the pounds just in case. His dog was on the site but being the weekend the owner thought the pound would be closed and went along on Monday to fetch him. He was told that the dog had been destroyed in error!!!! He had, I believe, been a bit of a hero with his troup and had saved many lives. The pound said as the dog was not microchiped they could not identify him. What an end for a valliant dog. Is it usual for service dogs not to be microchiped?

How terribly sad, I would have thought that he should have been microchipped if he had been overseas surely?

He wasn't a trained service dog, he was a stray dog that helped the troops and was rescued and taken back to the US.

OMG how awful. The people in the pound make mistakes like all of us I suppose, but what a terrible consequence. :(

> A stray GSD in Afghanistan had been shot at & blasted by explosives by the Taliban so often she was given the name Target .She was rescued by a US soldier & taken to the States , where she became a bit of a celebrity even appearing on the Oprah Wimprey show . However she got out from her new home & was picked up by the dog warden & put in the dog pound , & due to a `clerical error ` she was put down . Typical USA efficiency . (P31 Daily Mail )  Charlie
