My bother and his wife have just homed one of my pups however it would appear my brother is allergic to her. She is short haired and has very little hair loss. They are absolutely besotted with her and have no intentions of returning her to me. Can anyone suggest where they go from here as to how my brother and 'Lily' can co-exist under the same roof! My sister-in-law has been in tears at the thought of them having to return the puppy to me which of course i would do if needed.

Get him on antihistamines until he gets used to her I am allergic to new cats, Friends daughter was allergic to pups but not adult dogs so with a bit of luck it will be fine.

It could be that when the pup changes her coat to an adult coat that the allergy will lessen,a dn also he may just get used to her.

There is a product that can be used to wipe over the dog to lessen reaction 'petalklenz'(sp).  There are antihistamines ans washing hands etc.  I am assuming the allergy is mild?

It is usually the dander or oils that people are allergic to and short coated breeds affect people more than double coated or long coated.

From my understanding it normally get better. I have 2 very good friends with bad allergies. One now has a long coated GSD and she is fine and also with any other dog now, providing she doesn't touch a dog and then her eyes.

Another is constantly sneezing and takes tablets, she grew up with a Lab and was fine after a few weeks, so is intending now she has a new home to live in with her b/f to start a search next year for the right gundog puppy. She doesn't care and will smother my dogs with love and attention regardless of the sneezing and even wants to come to Crufts with me next year!!

Before they despair they should give PetalCleanse a try. I've heard people say it helps, and they've got nothing to lose.

As Reikiangel says is he sure that it is not some other knd of allergy?  THink house dust mite season is now.

It gets easier, you build up an immunity to animals you spend a lot of time with.  I take antihistamines every day (I once enquired about the injection but they wouldn't let me have it for long term use).  I'm obsessive about hand-washing.  The dogs are not allowed upstairs nor on furniture, they're also taught not to lick (as that used to set me off terribly).  Let us know how he gets on, I bet he's really fed up :(

I agree, I'm allergic to cats and dogs I'm not used to but not my own - I take Zirtek everyday and have no problems.

The thing my brother is most worried about is his tight chest. All his life he was brought up with dogs right from birth. At the age of about 8yrs (i think) he had what Drs diagnosed as a severe asthma attack. He was hospitalised but thankfully pulled through with no ill effects. Having spoken to my mum she is now wondering if infact he wasn't asthmatic but suffering an allergy from the dogs! I have forwarded all the advice you guys have given in the hope something will work. He isn't too keen on taking antihistamines as he is at uni three days a week and doesn't want to come over drowsy while he's meant to be paying attention. Does anyone know of a non drowsy brand? I know he's keen to try the petcleanse.
He told me on the phone last night he'd have to be on his death bed to give her back and he's a 30 year old something big strapping lad, not normally known for showing his softer side. 

Zirtek is non drowsy - I teach at a college and haven't sent myself to sleep yet :-) . It is a worry if you get wheezy though - I can get this if I have cat hair near my face, sometimes dog hair too.
