In  my local paper there is an advert for 'outstanding chunky victorian bulldog puppies' the price £1,750 (the price is not in the local rag) but I found the same advert online with the price. Are people really stupid enough to pay this price for a dog of this breed and type?

People are paying sometimes £1,600 for a Labradoodle so yep.  They believe the hype that they are healthier.

Not for a "breed" but a cross or mongrel no problem as long as they are told the story, good thing really as they may well need to be wealthy to deal with the future problems.

I regularly see that breed and English bulldogs at about £2000, with a particular 'show kennel' always having a litter I cant remember the last time I didn't see it advertising puppies, Infact Iv even seen them at £3000

Seen Bostons and Frenchies advertised at those prices locally too :(   Can't believe it costs that much more to rear a litter of bostons or Frenchies

The Victorian Bulldog isn't even a recongnised breed.

I used to know someone who bred English bulldogs and exported them to America and when the average pup price was £100 they were charging and getting £1000 so ten times the price now of a pedigree would be in the region now of £6000 they said it was because they always had to be bred and delivered by a vet so costs were higher. I thought my pups were expensive at £250

Some people are under the (mis)illusion that if something is more expensive it must be better. As we know in dog breeding this is most definately not the case and i'd argue its not the case in other situations too.
Sadly, i expect a few people will be mad enough to pay this and no doubt the 'breeder' will be encouraged to do it again in the future

There was a cat breeder who charged four figures for their kittens, way, way higher than anyone else, and because of that a lot of celebrities considered the kittens to be must haves. The breeder actually became a millionaire. Was eventually suspended by the GCCF for all sorts of things.
