can anyone advise me on a collar for a german shephard for day to day use not for training or agility etc thanks

Decent weight half check collar.

thats what we have at the moment but had conflicting advice about pulling their coat what do you think of police style choke chains the non fur pulling

Go for rolled leather half checks

I have half checks on all mine and have no problems with their hair and mine are all long coats.

Mine has a half check and he is longcoated and wears it all the time. As it hangs lose most of the time I find it doesnt wear the fur.
Just noticed the comment about the police style ones not actually seen them but I was told by a police trainer dont worry about his coat thelook of it doesnt matter so I wouldnt be convinced they do not do any damage

The long link chain collars (commonly called choke) but calle fur savers are very useful in GSD.  Obviously there is no need to put the lead on the live link, you can put it on the dead link when the collar acts like any OTHER one leather, plastic or fabric!

I wouldn't use a chain as an 'all day house collar' especially on a young pup. The others - inc half checks - can only tighten so far, a chain will tighten until you have a dead dog if it hooks up on something and you do not take instant action :-(

I found in the old days (lol) when I knew know different a full check chain wore my lomghaired gsd fur in one patch to the point it was no longer than that of a short hair. She looked vey odd with the patch and it only grew back when I changed to a roll collar and headcollar.

I would not leave a collar of ANY description on a dog................ I only put a collar on when needed, it aint needed in the house!

I'm the opposite, all mine wear collars at all times.

It's a risk assessment.

For mine there is far more danger of them bolting onto the busy road (short hall, busy road with bus stop) than getting caught up by their collars.

They are either supervised or shut in the kitchen when I am out.  They have deep ruffs into which the collars snuggle, and they don't tend to play at grabbing each other by the collar.

They also are not likely to get panicky if they put their foot through the chain when out, (the only time the collar is likely to slide up the neck is when they are very out of coat and mooching) sniffing while walking, they just stand there or bark for my attention to sort it out for them.
