I've waited for this litter for years, both parents had all available health tests. My bitch is week 7 and her appetite is awful! It's not been great through pregnancy but now is just awful! She won't eat her kibble, neither will she eat steak, chicken, scrambled egg, quiche, egg custard, could go on.... I've got her booked into the vets tomorrow. She will only eat her faveroute treats which I have strictly limited as there's little nourishment in them. I am SO upset and stressed, Any suggestions very welcome.

Have you tried raw meat? It was the only thing my latest pregnant bitch would eat in late pregnancy -small meals 4 times a day. She started eating normally again a few days after pups were born.
Thanks MarianneB, yes tried raw meat her interest lasted 1 meal. This is breaking my heart, I can feel her pups moving and I'm sat here thinking they're not getting any nutrition :-(

My first bitch would only eat liver cake for virtually the whole of her pregnancy, she gave birth to 7 healthy, perfectly normal weight puppies! She then ate like a horse through the whole time she was feeding the pups. My other girl ate all through her pregnancy but wouldn't eat whilst feeding the puppies, the complete opposite! She also reared 9 very healthy puppies. Hard to do, I know, but try to relax or she may pick up your anxiousness.

Jasmine, I go with zajak. The times I have despaired! But it always seems to come out in the wash. :-)
I've worried that bitches would just be a bag of bones after whelping, and have nothing to give their pups. But, for some reason it always seems to turn out ok.
Not long now, so chin up, I bet she will surprise you and eat for the olympics once pups arrive! :-)
They do it to give us something to worry about. :-)
Jean it so true! LOL
my girl had pups 6months ago and my goodness i was going out my mind with worry she ate like a pig carrying them but once pups were born she wouldnt eat! in the end we had to force feed her :( but if we didnt we would of had a very poorly girl ,she was a wonderful mummy and feed them and cleanned them but just wouldnt eat! she is only just starting to look back to her self and she only had 3 pups to feed ,plus she is a large breed girl and can have upto 12 pups ,it was that bad!
try not to worry i too have had a girl not eat much at all and go on to have 9 fat puppies and mum started to eat well about the 5 day of having them and didnt stop eating lol infact when the pups were about 5 weeks old she didnt look like she had any :) if it wasnt for her teats hanging abit the new puppy owners would of think i was lieing that she was the mum LOL
good luck xx

HI Jasmine I know how you feel my girl is 4 and a half weeks now and wont eat anything except raw chicken or dog food now and again. She is a large breed so could be carrying up to 12 pups so it concerns me too although after reading replies to your post I think I shousld stop panicking. Going to make scrambled egg and see if she will eat that x
Thanks everyone for the replies. I cooked her some liver and she ate it, just a shame she can't have more! So I cooked a lamb steak, cut it up and rubbed the pieces of lamb on a piece of liver and she ate all of them, I was stunned! Can I have the recipe form the liver cake please Zajak I think it may come in handy! ;-). Also upon my Dad's suggestion I mixed a teaspoon of honey in with her kibble and she ate it :-) don't know how long her interest will last but thank gawd she has eaten!

Liver Cake Recipe
8 oz liver (lamb or chicken)
4 oz self raising flour
2 eggs
2 tsps garlic powder (the more the better)
Put all the ingredients into a blender until the mixture is smooth, pink and runny (not too rigid a requirement depending on how chunky you want the cake). Pour into cake tin or swiss roll tin and place in oven at 180 C for around 30 - 40 minutes.
Leave to cool and cut into bite size pieces.
These can be split up into enough pieces for one show / training session and placed in separate bags for freezing.
I also make it with tuna sometimes as Henry in particular used to go mad for fish!
Happy she's eaten something now, it does put your mind at rest.
I'd try anything sweet aswell, including sweets, I give mine jelly sweets to get there blood sugar back up. If it drops from not eating, it makes them feel a little sick and even less like eating. It might be why the honey worked as i do that at tea time to get their appitites going. hope she keeps it up.
Lucydogs, have you tried putting softened veg in the liver cake, mine like veg so wondered if would make them a little more tempting. Do you have to alter the recipe.

Never thought of trying veg - it's not that mine don't like the liver cake because trust me they go mad for it! Just that Henry loved fish so much I thought I'd try making tuna into a cake as well because it was impossible to give him pieces of fish at a show!
Thanks for recipe LucyDogs x
