Hi all,  I had my bitch bred and tis is the only time she had left our house with being in season within a couple of days she started to be sick then diarohea. the vet put her on antibiotics  Clavaseptin incase she was pregnant it wouldnt harm things.  She is now on her 4th course of these as everytime she finishes a course 24hrs laterr she sarts being sick wont eat and the following day the diarohea starts again?   A soon as she goes back on the antibiotics with 3-5 hours she'll eat again and the diarohea clears up.  At the moment he is keeping her on these ab just incase she is pregnant ( the scan doesn't shoe anything but she is acting pregnant).  Any ideas what it could be? or anything else I can be doing to help?

Has giardia (parasite) and as AB's are working temporarily, campylobacter (bacterial infection) been ruled out, or a case of bacterial overgrowth in the intestinal tract.

The vet hasnt done any tests, think he is happy to carry on with the ab's till we're confident she isn't pregnant.  Gardia - is that a form of worm? The reason i ask is she was due for worming just before mating and the breeder said not to do it ?  I was thinking about worming her with Panacur that is ok for pregnant bitches but not sure, i dont want to upset her tummy anymore than necessary.  If it is Campo or even gardia would my other dog be ill, they are together all the time and he is fine?

Well dosing with Panacur from day 40 would knock the giardia on the head, as the normal protocol for that parasite is a weeks course, and she would be on 25 days for pregnancy.

Took my little girl back vets again yesterday, He is saying she may have an unbalance of bacteria and maybe on ab's for rest of her life:( he hasnt done any test yet until we know for sure she isnt in whelp.  He is just keeping her on the same ab's til then.  He then said they can do an endoscophy (prob spelt wrong) and take samples from the gut.  I started her on Panacur 10% as you suggested brainless and will continue for the 25 days much to my vets disgust.  He says it won't be parasites otherwise it wouldnt settle whilst she is on ab's and when i meantioned giardia he looked at me gone out as though he hadn't got a clue what i was talking about.  He tried to take a blood sample with 6 nurses and myself pinning her down for the pregnancy test but she was having none of it. Really think its time to change vets! which is a shame as the normal vet is bril but he is always on holiday or at the other equine surgery:(

I wonder if the vet is thinking along the lines of a malabsorbtion problem. This is one reason why dogs are sometimes put on antibiotcs for life. Usually Oxycare or some such. Malabsorbtion can cause sloppy stools because she portion of the gut isn't doing its job properly. A simple blood test could confirm this.

I would deffinitly get a second opinion Given that you are using panacure are you thinking about panceas insufficiency if so get the vet to do a test. It is controlable and I would like more information if it were one of mine ab's for life is quite a lot unless you are in full agreement and understand whats happening  (jmo)

I'm not in full agreement I don't even think the vet has a clue to be honest I just think he is avoiding a decision or further investigation until we know if she is in whelp?  I think i'll just continue until I know then I think i'll have a decision to make and lots of quetsions to ask
