Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch carrying only one pup again....stressed!
- By MandyC [gb] Date 10.11.10 20:15 UTC
Ok peeps.

some of you may know the story...Last christmas my large breed girl was pregnant with what we could tell my her size was a very small litter, well one day after her due date she very suddenly lost fluid and blood, long and short of it....c-section resulted in one dead girl puppy :(

Well after much debating we attempted the same mating again this year in the hope of getting my much wanted girl puppy....well yet again she appears to be carrying just one and her first due date was sunday...second tuesday. She is content, eating and no discharges, however i am very concerned that she will again not go into full labour and we will end up with a section again, she has had colostrum in now since sunday too but shows no signs at all of going into labour. My vets advise was to wait today and if nothing then in for a section at 10am in the morning because of her previous outcome.

Now what would you experienced people do.....i am terrified of the section as my breed is not great with ga, however i feel if i leave her another couple of days we are very likely to end up with a section anyway and could end up with another dead puppy which would be heartbreaking again, but i must put my girl first, who thinks i am rushing in too soon with a section and who thinks the section is actually the safer option. I would be over the moon to get a live little girl but not at the risk of my baby.

soooooooo stressed :(

As the start of labour is started by the puppies producing a chemical it is not unusual that one pup will not start the labour so a section would be the best answer if you know there is only one or two pups.

> labour is started by the puppies producing a chemical

Well I continue to learn something new everyday.

I can understand your stress and given past experience with intertia I would be very reluctant to let this girl go over her dates.

You could ask for a serum progesterones to determine if your bitch should be going into labour.  About 48 hours before whelping, the progesterone level drops to the 2 ng/ml range and within about 24 hours of whelping, the level drops to the 1 ng/ml range. This can help determine the proper timing of a c-section, especially if the progesterone level or LH level were not used to determine the ovulation date. By correctly determining the whelping time, it can prevent puppies from being taken by c-section too early and thereby decreasing their chance of survival.

If levels are above 2ng she should be safe to leave, esp if pup is moving etc, but if lower than 2ng with no sign of labour starting I would be looking to a section given her due dates.

carnt add any more but want to say the very best of luck with her and the pup fingers crossed pup is born and everything goes great! xxx
- By Pedlee Date 11.11.10 09:35 UTC
Have you had you're girl scanned to determine the number of pups?
- By Goldmali Date 11.11.10 11:25 UTC
No advice Mandy but am keeping everything crossed -you so deserve some good news.
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 11.11.10 13:02 UTC
Can you hear a heartbeat with a stethescope? My small breed bitch had a singleton in June, a breed known for never going to term, due date was Thursday/Saturday and although worried I did let the vet wait until Monday surgery hours for the elective C-section because I could hear a heartbeat and the bitch was ok in herself. In your case I think I would be inclined to go for a c section on the Monday, halfway between the 2 dates and less expensive than a weekend, as long as your girl shows no worrying signs in the meantime of course!
- By MandyC [gb] Date 11.11.10 14:20 UTC
well we had the section and got the same result as last year.....one female puppy, worked on her for over an hour until her heart stopped :(

I am so so sad, my girl had to be spayed at the same time as we found a huge cyst on her ovary, explains just the one probably, now i am worried sick ambout losing my girl too as i asked about spaying her before we started as i had no intention of trying again whatever the outcome and he said it made things alot riskier so we decided we wouldnt, then was forced to when he opened her up, no now have the fear of god that i could lose my baby girl too.

It has been the most horendous year

Praying my Amber is ok.....and so sad that i didnt get my little girl....i tried so hard
- By Goldmali Date 11.11.10 14:23 UTC

The two bitches of my own that I have with a  C section were both spayed at the same time and both recovered really well.
- By MandyC [gb] Date 11.11.10 16:34 UTC
Thank you to everyone for your kinds wishes. My poor Amber she has been through so much and for that i feel totally responsible, and now of coursing thinking i should of waited to see if she would deliver naturally then maybe baby would of made it. Please god my girl will be snuggling up on the sofa with me in no time. My heart was set on a little girl and for the one baby to be a girl for the second time and not survive its so upsetting.

It been a tough week as to add to my already awful year my very dear cousin took her own life last week also so i am feeling emotional as it is and this is and extra kick in the teeth......cant remember the last good nights sleep i had. Well i will be up with my girl all night tonight as i wont leave her side, am sitting with her now and she is all cosied up wrapped in her fleecey blanket and sleeping so crossing everything that my girl will be ok as she is my top priorty.

Thanks for that too barbara as i am very worried about that, hopefully my girl will make a speedy recovery too.

Thanks again for all the support it is very much appreciated. x

Wow - you are certainly going through a tough time in every sense.  Just give your girl lots of hugs and together you'll get through this.

I'm sure you do feel bad about putting her through this a second time - but we all know how quickly dogs bounce back, you'll be struggling to stop her from pulling her stitches out in a few days.  Try not to feel too bad, it really wasn't too much to ask to have an Amber daughter, it's such dreadful bad luck this has happened to you both again.
- By Linz13 [gb] Date 11.11.10 16:49 UTC

horse, stable, bolted.....if GA is a breed risk and the bitch had this problem last time, one must question why one would repeat the mating and put her in same situation a second time!!!
- By MandyC [gb] Date 11.11.10 19:11 UTC
as she had a superb litter of 10 delivered with ease 3 years ago, and at the time of her previous section my vet found no problems within her uterus to give a reason for the singleton we had hoped that the single puppy was down to timing of matings and he advised me he see no problems with trying once more as she had delivered a normal litter without any issues at all.

Didnt know or expect we would get another singleton.....but cheers anyway sam!!!

Everyone else thank you for your KIND words at what is a very difficult time for me and my family.....Think i will have a break from on here for a while!

How utterly insensitive, this poor girl is beating herself up enough without her motives being questioned.  Have a heart for goodness sake.

Mandy, i am so sorry for both your losses, everyday the grief will lessen and eventually you will come out the other side a stronger person.
My thoughts are with you.
