Hi everyone (i bet its spelt wrong)
my 2yr old gsd has the runs, I have tried diffrent dried foods including royal cannin hypoallergenic? but none seem to work, can anyone suggest something that may help her, none of my freinds can. she only gets dried food not any tinned or cooked meat. many thanks
Ivan.

Try Royal Canine Dry Sensitivity with nothing else in the diet, your vet may be able to supply this.
And if it cures the runs, try not to switch foods, find one that suits and stick to it. I know the problem your dog has and how important it is for the dog to have firm bowel movements.

Id try to clear the runs first on a plain diet i.e. rice, chicken and fish, talk to the vet to rule out any possible problems or tummy bugs then introduce back to good quality sensitive food and see if the dog is allergic to any of the foods, this could be a case of detective work, id also check that she isn't eating anything from outside as Amber used to do that and get the terrible runs.

Hey triona

The OPs dog has a perianal fistula, so has been under the vets supervision for sometime.

Try tinned Chappie
- By JeanSW Date 17.10.10 21:27 UTC
Agree with Nova.  Chappie did it for my Border Collie.  And the vet commented on how super his coat looked!

Hi everyone, Ive tried all sorts, royal cannin from vets for 1 month (dried food only )still no change chappies the same, boiled chicken, boiled rice, but none seem to cure her, I got some tablets from my vet to settle her stomach but they dont seem to work, WHAT ELSE CAN I DO
I AM STARTING TO GET WORRIED NOW.And of course she is loosing weight . Ivan.

Natural live yoghurt which has intestinal healthy bacteria! I'm guessing goats yoghurt would be even better. Although someone may come along with more accurate advice on yoghurt and its use. It has worked in the past on my dogs!
Good luck!

Go back to the vet with a stool sample she might have an infection that is causing the runs.
What ever it is something that definately needs looking into further.

Hi, I would but its liquid, Ispoke to my vet an she gave me tablets to settle her stomach.

If it persists, a poop sample would be worth taking, even if its not best quality poop, cos they can check for things like Giardia and Campylobachter.  Or your dog may well be allergic to something in the food, like wheat/gluten etc.

I have a Malinois like this -nothing worked. It was suggested to me I stop all dog food and just feed him raw meat and bones. That is now about 18 months ago and he's been perfect ever since -apart from the odd time when I've slipped up and given him a treat, then he gets bad instantly. As long as it's just raw meat he's perfect.

I would also thoroughly worm her for both round- and tapeworms if you haven't done so recently.

PS: Is the liquid poo light in colour and smells like rotten eggs? If so it could be Giardia.

Just a thought has she been tested for pancreas insufficiency / Th ac htthe stools re so runnyshoudnt be a problem for testing

> Hi, I would but its liquid,

I have used a syringe in cases like this.  Even taking the liquid in, they have run tests for me.
- By Twinny [gb] Date 09.11.10 19:00 UTC
I would ask the vet to do some more tests. I lost my beagle last year. He started with chronic diarhoea and was losing weight quickly. As Furriefriends suggested it could be his pancreatic function which is what they thought Hendrix had. His body was not retaining protein and the vet despite loads of tests was puzzled.. They also tested for Addisons (not sure if this was the upset tum that led them to this theory - I had not heard of it before). I guess what I am trying to say is ask the vet to do further tests before it goes any further. It needs to be sorted as soon as possible especially if she's losing weight.

Hi, Ihave been giving her some yoghurt this last 2 days and she has perked up, running around like an idiot when i take her on the field But if she still has the runs on friday i will take her to vets. She only has dried food  but not eating very much, How much yoghurt should i give her  for 1 helping i have been giving her 2/3 tablespoon full. Lets hope that works, Ivan.

Hi dukedog, Can you tell me what perianal fistula is  please (simple terms only please)
Thanks.
- By Perry Date 11.11.10 09:08 UTC
It seems like a food intolerance to me, I'd get the samples to the vet to rule out illness.  In the meantime, the foods that help stop the runs are mashed potato (no butter or milk added) banana, and boiled eggs.  Yoghurt helps with the good bacteria (sp) so this could be added to the banana, might be worth feeding just this for 24 hours and see how she goes.

If she is being fed dried food she may have an intolerance to wheat or any of the additives so once the runs have been sorted out my advice would be trying a raw diet as Marianne mentioned.

Our dobe is allergic to rice in a major way. It makes her poops liquid. As a lot of the dried foods contain rice we swapped her onto naturediet which only has around 5% rice but we found it difficult to keep the weight on without feeding her a huge amount.

Now we feed her grain free Acana along side the naturediet which she enjoys and has solved the poop issue.

- By ilovegsd [gb] Date 12.11.10 20:16 UTC
Hi everyone,Taken my  bitch to the vets today and they were going to give her a bio-opsy to sort the problem out then i got a phone call about 10-30am informing me there where some serious problems, Her tonseles where swollen and something wrong with spleen (some sort of cancer)then the word linfoma was used, Trying to take all this infomation in at the same time was beyond me especially on the phone, So i asked if this opp would cure her and was told it would help but no garantees, I am still not sure what all this means (perhaps someone one here can tell me in simple terms, not vets talk. and of course it will cost me a small fortune as she is not insured, but what the hell its only money and i put my dog first so im not bothered about the cost. She will have to stay at the vets for a couple of days before she can come home,Ijust hope everything turns out alright, any information would be greatfuly recieved. Iwill keep you posted, Thanks again Ivan.
