Hi
I have a 6 Month old pup and when she has her toys or her bone she will play as you would expect a pup to play
But this is what is confusing me .......none of my other dogs have done this..... she will get down on the floor go on her back and wriggle and squirm on top of said objects using the back of her head as well as body and she seems to get more pleasure out of this than the usual puppy play thing she does .....is there a reason why she does this ?

I used to have a dog who did that - he did it simply because it was fun! None of my others have, although one likes to shoot himself across the sitting room floor on his back after pushing himself off using the sofa!

My 9 month old also does this and always has! I also haven't got a clue why, but very funny to watch, in fact she is doing it right now!!

At a show I offered a cocktail sausage to a puppy who's owner couldnt get it's attention for showing in the next class... it promptly dropped it and rolled on it...much to everyones amusement...(even her owners)..the grass was dry!

my 9 year old collie x does this with balls, bones etc.......sadly she also does it with anything that smells VILE!!!!!!! while out on a walk. :-(

ok so she's normal lol only thing I don't want is the rolling in vile you know what things .....if she keeps to her bone and toys I'll be quite happy
Thanks for the replies
Do you think it might be a form of scenting/ownership. One of mine does it with toys and he always appears to be happy doing it!

My Golden Retriever does this with lots of different objects. He will roll on sticks and stones that he finds on walks, will roll on toys especially balls and then just rolls in the grass for the sheer enjoyment of having a good roll. He rolls on the carpet at home and often hotches himself along the carpet much as JG describes :-) One of his favourite things to roll in is the huge piles of shavings and sawdust left by the forresters - wonderful when it is wet :-(
He also delights in rolling in vile substances as well :-(

One of my terriers always does this to her bones before chewing them, like sawheaties I think perhaps it may be an ownership thing.
If it makes them happy, who worries that it looks daft? :-)

All mine do it, always thought to be the most sensible of behaviours as a predator, it makes sense to mask your smell with your environment or with the smell of your prey (or sausages for that matter!!) :-)

Oh and I was beginning to think it was a Retriever thing! My bitch always rolls on her toys, especially her tennis ball just after she's caught it. Both of mine will just chuck themselves onto the grass and have a good roll, with glee in their eyes!
Oh and I've lost count of the amount of times I've had to hose off disgusting smelling stuff, too numerous to mention :(
Freshly chipped bark is absolutley irresistable, at least it smells vaguely pleasant when driving home in the car...

Well...here's one.... why do you think that my 4 year old 'madly in love' with me male, waits til I get out of bed then jumps into my place and rolls vigorously around in apparent ecstacy?
Ive chosen to be flattered! :-)
My spaniel does this on piles of rotting grass in the summer - LOL the stuff goes everywhere. If he doesn't roll in it he pees on it.
Def. scenting behaviour.,

Haha 2 of mine love to do that to my hubbys pillow, I put it down to him having a sweaty head lol
you lose a lot of marks in obedience when your dog grabs hold of the dumbell, throws it in the air and proceeds to roll on it with a silly grin on her face before picking it up and doing a nice present......
