Hello im new to the board, im being brave and posting my first post!! lol.  I have a 6 year old traditional shar-pei called Kya. She has got slight allergies and sore paws. She is constantly licking them and the vet says she may have ocd of washing her paws (?). After spending hours on this fantastic website i went and bought some hibiscrub from the chemsit (£8.00 for a 250 ml bottle!!). I have just bathed and dried her paws using a diluted solution. And now she seems to be enjoying the flavour!!!!! Please tell me this wont harm her as she wont stop licking her paws and my hands when i was using it, she is a great lump and i tried not to let her. I have given her a sprinkling of thornits powder too in case it is mites.

Any advice would be fantastic.
Thanks guys, Tasha xx

Hi Tasha and welcome

I use Hibiscrub for paws too.  Next time you need some try Lloyds chemists if you have one as they sell it for less than the price you paid.  You can get it online too which ought to work out a lot cheaper for you.

Licking paws can be habit forming so you're right to be concerned.  Many dogs dislike having wet paws and lick them til they are 'dry' which can make the problem worse so take care to dry them carefully after washing.  The best bet would then be to distract her with a nicer alternative - maybe a stuffed Kong or some kind of longer lasting chew.  Whenever you see her licking her paws ask her to do something else - don't just say no, get her moving, take her into the garden for a wander, ask for a few sit stays, in fact any brain training is good as it gets her to focus on something else.  Ideally you want to break the itch-scratch-itch cycle (or in her case the itch-lick-itch cycle!).

Hi Tasha,

You can also get Hibiscrub from the http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk website I think its pretty cheap on there. I have a couple of our dogs who tend to be nibblers especially their feet. I use a combination of a small amount of  malaseb about a tsp and  2tsp of Hibiscrub mixed together and diluted in warm water approx 1/4 pint. I wipe the affected areas every day, dry them then put on a cream which is fantastic its called 'Dermacton' it comes from a company called http://www.aromesse.com it has a very strong lemony smell and is a perfectly natural product but they hate the smell and do not touch their paws all day with this on, its great for itchy, sore skin it also helps bring back hair growth after excessive nibbling.

I buy all my hibiscrub from hyperdrug, but thanks for the other link.  I've saved it to favourites in case I ever need it.  Very impressed with the photos and improvements on those dogs.

If you want to save even more the generic chlorhexadine scrub is called vetasept. Its the same strength and stuff just not the brand name of hibiscrub.
