Topic Dog Boards / Health / Heart Murmur in Puppy

I took my 5 puppies to the vet today for their first vaccination and microchipping and they picked up that one had a slight murmur, the vet said that it may correct ifself in a few weeks! The pups are 7 weeks old and this one is the smallest of the pack.

Of course I am so worried as this is my first litter, I have already spoken to the new owners and we have agreed that I should keep the pup for now and see wha happens.

Has this happened to any other breeder on here, I could really do with some advice please

Both parents are clear and do not have this problem

Hiya, don't worry about the heart murmur this sort of thing happens more often than you think, it usually happens in large breed dogs and its because the valves take longer to develop in a larger dog so a heart murmur is present. Your vet is right this usually sorts itself out naturally in a few weeks time, and the puppy will be non the worse.

I do know some vets get a bit excited and want to do lots of test but it sounds like your vet is good, don't get any tests done yet, wait it out. However if the puppy has a murmur at say 6 months it may not close, but I know of dogs that live long happy lives with slight murmurs

Thank you for your responses, the breed is min poodle and I really hope that because he's the smallest it will work out ok

> the breed is min poodle

My vet had a litter of Border Terriers in, the breeder had all of them booked, and she was worried to death that one had a murmer.  It had cleared by 12 weeks.

This is certainly making me feel better, I really felt for the new owners as well it was not the call I wanted to make. I've spent the last few hours trying to find out what I can about this.

The funny thing is I have tried to do everything right and best for the mum and pups

I think more of these Innocent flow murmurs get piked up with the earlier start to puppy vaccinations, meaning vets are seeing pups at 8 weeks and not 10 plus to start teh vaccinations.

Sounds like a flow murmur, you get them a lot in my breed and they're often mistaken for MVD murmurs and make breeders and new owners panic, and then they disappear. I'm sure this will be the case for your baby.

I had one at 8weeks, which had gone by 11 weeks. I agree that a lot of the time vets are picking up late closures rather than actual heart problems at this age.

Thank you for all your replys its making not panic so much, it certainly seems to be more about the vets seeing the pups early but it really makes you feel bad.

Do you think its worth me getting him checked again at 9 weeks or waiting until he's 12 weeks?

the only one I ever had from a bitch I was whelping for a Friend in the breed, was noticed at the 8 week jabs and not there at 10 weeks.

This pup came back to em at 9 years old when the marriage broke down, and then thankfully ended up going back to the husband when they sorted themselves out, and s far as i know is a healthy (though overweight) 10 1/2  year old.

Well as you'll be going anyway at 9 weeks for the 2nd jab they might as well listen, but don't panic if it hasn't quite gone yet.

The pups aren't having their second jab until 10 weeks, the vet said that 7 & 10 are better than 8 & 10. I think I'll leave it until then, I have found myself watching the little fella and he acts no different to any of his litter mates it makes yo so paranoid when the vets say about murmurs.

From what I know understand perhaps it better that the pups don't go to the vets until their older like before it would certainly stop all this if its only a tempory thing.

Thanks for all your help I will def let you know the outcome of this.
