Hi everyone. Megan keeps getting up and moving to the other side of the box when the pups get near her.  She's not done this before but this evening she keeps doing it. Anyone else had this before and any ideas why it's happeneing.

How old are they, and are you trimming their nails?

Have you got the room that she is in to hot?

Hi,
My girl does this, once she has fed and cleaned the pups, she moves away from them and even gets out of the box, she has got a bit better as time has gone on (pups 4 weeks old today) and I have seen her lying with them, but once she know we are around she gets out of the box again! I think if she gets too hot she would move away and also like one of the others said if the puppies nails get too long this makes things uncomfortable for the mum and she can be reluctant to feed.

Maybe she was too hot cause we were in the study.  We've not had to put any heating on because my other half has got a massive plasma tv in there and my god that thing gives of some serious heat. LOL. I will trim their tiny claws later and see if that makes any difference.  She is with them now and seems happy so maybe she was just feeling a bit too hot the other night.  The pups are now 7 days old and gradually putting on weight.  I was starting to worry less until i read the post about fading puppies, omg i'm back on alert now.

I think being hot might have been an issue, its so close at the moment with the windows/doors closed.  could you open a window slightly where they won't be in a draught just for a few mins every few hours to cool the room a little.  Its killing me at the minute.  if its too windy obviously it might prove a problem but can't think of anyting else, a fan would make too much cold.  You're doing the nails so that will help.

Glad she's with them again.

have you got a decent sleep yet?

> have you got a decent sleep yet?

I have a 5yr old boy so i've not really slept properly for years LOL. I am a very light sleeper, so everytime they squeak i'm wide awake and checking em out.  I don't mind tho, they are so worth the sleepless nights and worry, i'd do it again in heartbeat.

It's really difficult with the weather being so changeable at the moment isn't it.  I can't leave the windows open in the study cause it's downstairs.  Last time i forgot to shut the window properly, we got robbed but that's a whole other story. LOL

Glad to hear things have settled down. This weather is very strange at the moment, I have to keep changing things in the room I have the puppies, one minute I've got the heat lamp on for them and the heating then a few hours later everything is switched off as the sun has come out and it's roasting. the next day the wind is up and it's cool again, just can't seem to get a settled day. LOL.

this heating problem is why I have a seperate heater outside  and a thermometer inside the whelp box so that I can keep the temp level.
I personally wouldnt open a window this time of year  but maybe open the door an inch or two if it gets too warm .
I would check out mums teats to make sure they are not sore and also her mouth as that can become sore with all the constant licking of the puppies.
I also put a bed for mum just outside the whelp box so she can see puppies  but climb out for a break if she wishes.

Leanne

Are you giving mum very soft food while her mouth is most probably sore?
