Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Who worms their bitch with Panacur?
- By KaneFizz [gb] Date 30.10.10 19:48 UTC
I was just wondering who worms their bitch from day 40 until 2 days post whelp. And if so have you ever had implications?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.10.10 20:09 UTC
6 generations, which is 16 litters, never a problem with the bitch or any effect on the newborns.
- By bucksmum [gb] Date 30.10.10 21:06 UTC
I never used to but did on my last litter. No problems at all,and on worming the litter at 3,5 and 7 weeks no sign of worms at all so will use it on every bitch in the future.

Another Panacur fan here.  :-)

I use Panacur 10% suspension, and have done for years.  I have never had a problem, even with very tiny breeds.  I count my day 40 from date of last tie, but don't know if others do the same.

Many folk with toys will tell you to use Panacur 2.5% and I really don't see the need, if you are capable of working out doses accurately.  It only means that you give them 4 times as much, and it's hard enought to get down them if they don't want it!

Although most of my girls start on extra food around this time, and I give them a dish of white fish, poached in milk and water.  They normally gobble it down, without even noticing that I've mixed their Panacur in it.

I have never seen worms in any of my litters from birth onward, or for that matter in any of the adult  dogs.

i used this for my last girl ,now not sure if this would of happend anyway but she was scanned and we saw 6 she only went to have 3 ,i carnt say its down it the wormer but il never know! never used it with all my other girls and had large litters! i will be going back to dronatol i think this time worm before mating and 2 weeks with pups and mum :)

Another Drontal fan here - couldn't be doing with worming every day from day 40 or whatever the regime is.

I too have never seen a worm in any of my adults dogs or puppies.  Hopefully this is through regular worming regimes and not waiting until you do see something before acting on it.

Only time I have ever seen them was in my very first puppy which came from a pet shop (puppy farm) lesson learned about many things there...

i use panacur 10% on the bitch from day 40 of last tie too, always think best to play it safe, and all the pups from 2 weeks ect only had a few litters but never had problems and ive never actually seen worms either???lol
- By Norman [gb] Date 31.10.10 16:09 UTC
As others I use Panacur from day 40 not had problems yet.

Used Panacur with my recent, and first litter, with no problems. But I've also helped raise 10 other litters - each one mum was wormed with Panacur, again, no problems. It's the only wormer I would consider using for a pregnant bitch. I use Drontal routinely the rest of the year, but during pregnancy it's Panacur. Read up on the life cycle of worms and you'll see why it's important to worm during pregnancy, as well as routinely at other times :-)

Exactly!

Cant help on the bitch worming question, but my vet once told me that unless a dog has a heavy worm burden, you will probably never see worms even if they have one or two inside them when they are wormed routinely.  That is because once they are dead they are digested and so you dont see them come out.  If a dog has a heavy worm burden then that is when you get spaghetti poo.  The only dog Ive ever seen worms appear, was a tiny JRT rescue that had not been wormed whatsoever, had a massive belly and passed masses of worms once treated.  Actually passing them made her quite unwell and gave her bloody poo for a while.

I worm Mum pre mating with drontal then worm mum again when I worm the puppies ..for puppies I prefer panacur never had any worms.

I have always used Panacur from Day 40 to whelping and have never had a worm problem. However I do find it really difficult to get some bitches to take it mixed with food. During pregnancy my girls can be very fussy eaters and adding wormer just makes things worse so I am looking to try a different regime in the future.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 03.11.10 01:10 UTC
I give it by syringe straight in the mouth, but it is only 5ml at a time.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 03.11.10 07:47 UTC
thats ok isnt it brainless has long has theyve eaten their food just before this, but ive only had 1 bitch that would eat her food ,the rest where pickers so couldnt give it that way :( i found it way to hard for them ,not sure what this girl will be like with her food yet ,so i might just stick to dronatol x
- By fushang [gb] Date 03.11.10 08:11 UTC
can remember years ago whenever i brought a 8wk pup home and wormed it, it would always pass spaghetti. used to give me a bit of satifaction as i new i had zapped them, but now wormers dont work like that and you dont see them anymore.
- By JaybyJasper [gb] Date 03.11.10 08:27 UTC
I tried the syringe method too but getting 20ml down them without me wearing half of it was difficult lol
- By Brainless [gb] Date 03.11.10 12:07 UTC
Surely you don't have 80kg bitches though do you.  Well Bernies, maybe, btu then I woudl split the dose up over the day.

For more average bitches a 20kg bitch it's 5ml, for a 40kg bitch 10ml, that isn't hard to get down, it's one or two teaspoonfuls
- By Onderka [gb] Date 03.11.10 12:48 UTC
When i bought Dexter and Megan as pups, i spread the panacur on some thinly sliced ham and they had no idea they were eating it.  I agree trying to syringe it with out getting covered is quite fiddly.
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 03.11.10 13:07 UTC
Panacur 10% from day 40 here..never had any problems and no worms in either mum or pups. Dont think I would change either.
Only problem I get is mum not eating from week 4 onwards!!
- By Trialist Date 04.11.10 21:59 UTC
Poaching some fish in a little goat's milk can nicely disguise the taste of the wormer and is great for picky eaters ... so my girly tells me!
- By JaybyJasper [gb] Date 07.11.10 10:59 UTC
Yes Grace is 80kg and went up to 107kg before she whelped ! I tried to split the dose and syringe a little bit at a time but then soon learned what was coming and clamped her mouth shut.
I would be interested to know if there are any wormers approved for use in pregnant bitches that come in tablet form.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 07.11.10 11:33 UTC
ive look on the net and havnt found any :( ..if you find any plz post because id use them too :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.11.10 11:46 UTC
Only Panacur is licensed in pregnancy and it only comes as liquid or granules.

Just a point re doing, I dose as per non pregnant weight, nto what they weigh in whelp.
- By JaybyJasper [gb] Date 07.11.10 16:52 UTC
Yes I dose on non pregnant weight 80kg = 20 ml per day. I have never tried the granules but would need 2 sachets for an average girl so might be even more difficult to hide than the 20ml liquid. I have had girls in the past that have been so greedy when in whelp that they have licked the bowl clean along with the wormer. However, my last two girls were both really faddy eaters and as soon as something alien was added to their food, they turned their noses up.
Boiling the fish and milk sounds like a good idea that is worth a try in the future.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.11.10 17:46 UTC Edited 07.11.10 17:48 UTC
I have one that wouldn't take it in the food and sprayed me if I syringed it, and I found milk with a bit of oil from a tin of fish did the trick.
