Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / bitch wont leave my side.
- By Romside [gb] Date 02.11.10 18:05 UTC
Im 12 weeks pregnant and wondering if this is the problem.
i have 4 dogs two large two toys.the two large do shadow me i will say that, but my bitch the last 4 days will NOT let up.
ordinarily i can go and shower and the two rotts will follow and wait for a bit and then move to my bedroom where they finish waiting, but recently bella is acting extremly strange.she will follow me to put the bins out to spend a penny,to feed the dragons to load the washing machine.this afternoon after the woods run they all collapsed in the living room as did I ;-)  and i thought id have a nice cuppa to warm up.now

shes soundo and snoring by my feet tho so i moved she stayed asleep i get to the doorway and she flew up and trotted after me,all i did was flick on the kettle!

im worried shes insecure or somethin.we've always been the best of freinds dont get me wrong, but im worried its cos im pregnant.is she protecting me or is she just bein a total weirdo.
i was in and out of hospital with this sickness i couldnt keep nothing down but that was two weeks ago,im sure shes over that now...

any ideas??

I know one of my  dogs went peculiar everytime my sister in law visited when she was pregnant , I do think they smell, or hear something that is unnoticable to us .
She may feel she needs to protect you.

I'm sure they do know, perhaps through pheromones. I was talking to a neighbour and her friend in the street once and my dog started payinbg attention to her stomach - he was also less bouncy around her, keeping all feet on the floor;  she was amazed and asked me did he know she was pregnant?!

Being in and out of hospital may also have made her worry, dogs don't know why we sometimes disappear, they get used to routines and can get upset when those routines change, so she may be keeping and eye on you to make sure you don't disappear again.

Dogs certainly can sense when we are pregnant or ill, if they can hear our heartbeat and pulse changes and pick up on our chemical changes then it goes without saying that they must be able to pick up the heartbeat of a fetus too or any other changes in you.

Sidetracking- I know my mothers alpha bitch always knew when my bitch was in whelp long before she showed as she would automatically protect her from other dogs who were beginning to approach her on our walks by cutting them off or pushing them away from her, she never did it any other time apart from when she was in whelp.

So she is looking out for you either from routine changes or because you are pregnant either way she's doing what comes naturally to her, it's  nothing to worry about she's just following her instincts IMO she's a good girl and she's looking after her mum the only way she knows. :-)

She said that the picture was taken when he was 18 months old and know is a bit older.
I am sure if you PM she wont mind :) then you can tell me.

Too small for me to see details, looks like a BSD to me and I will guess the cross is collie or GSD. :-)
- By Dukedog Date 03.11.10 09:25 UTC
I'ts not crossed with GSD either I don't think, but then she could have bin windin me up.

I think she mentioned on another thread what the cross is, I won't spoil it for you. Happy Hunting for the answer :)

I'll put you out of your misery, JeanSW - yes dad was BSD (Groenendael) and mum was a black & white working sheepdog with one blue eye! He was 18mths in the pic (is now 4.5) but chose that pic to use as it's autmnal. Thought I might have seasonal avatars!

Thankfully I can get on with some work now.lol

Woo hoo, I win, one of my guesses was a collie! My favourite game at companion shows is 'guess the crossbreed', I just love trying to work out what's behind some of the dogs I see. Did a Cairn cross for grooming the other day, they didn't know what his other side was but I'm guessing Yorkie, he's halfway between the 2 for size, and particularly when wet so you could see the head shape it was a very Yorkie head, with soft Yorkie fur and a very Yorkie tail. But Cairn colour all over. Very pretty!

Apologies to Tamara for the topic straying somewhat; I've rounded it up like a good sheepdog (or dog warden) and made a new Guessing The Crosses thread here:
