Withought going into too much detail as i dont want to bore anyone i have a chihuhaha 4 year old bitch here.she is a rescue case.she has 4 pups i have managed to wean from her.they are 5 weeks now.

I will state for the record she is not a bitch of my own nor did i breed her!!! i took her on with puppies at 10 days old.
well it was that or she was being courior serviced to scotland

so the bitch was feeding puppies nicely and i was feeding her well and everything was going well, until she stole left over dinner from my dining table.
she threw the lot up and it took me 6 days to stop her throwing up.
of course i did all the steps to help a sick dog back to normal.well she is now holding down any food i give her but the weight just will NOT go back on.
i absolutly CANNOT walk her im afraid she'll never put the weight back on.
she was being fed on royal canin puppy but when i started to mix that back into her scrambled egg and rice ect ect,she would throw up.so i slowly put her on hi life pure chicken and veg,now its a wet food that she's holding but is looking like im starving her.she gets a sachet in the morning half in afternoon and half at night.

i cant feed her no more than three times a day or she will throw up.now because im not feeding her loads she will steal anything and its so hard.
im worried for the poor girl she came to me riddled with fleas and so thats cost me a bomb re doing my lot and the whole house and the two cars.

if someone could help me please id be ever so greatful.
the whole story is just horrible but i wont go into that now.

Has she been wormed?  Also the only thing I can suggest is more meals per day.  My bitches when rearign are on at least 4 meals and often 6 meals a day.

i didnt want to take her off the pups at all but she honestly looks so thin my god its not a pretty sight,i have wormed her yes.
i will try and feed her more a day then just hope she keeps it down ...

thank you.x

Try raw -either cut raw meat into small pieces with scissors or use mince. Many dogs can't take rice and/or vegetables. I had a HUGE problem with one of my large bitches' last litter, she lost abut 50 % of her body weight due to getting an upset stomach when I put her on puppy food. This time she has been kept on her normal complete food with extra meals of raw meat. No weight lost at all yet, stomach perfect. Raw meat often has a binding effect which really helps. Tiny dogs often won't eat it unless cut into small pieces though which is why I mentioned the scissors. (My smallest weighs 1.8 kgs.)

For a serious weight loss your best bet is to feed a small amount of something she can tolerate every hour.

ive used wainwrights tripe and rice wet trays when one of mine lost a fair bit of weight and had an inflamed gut.it got him back eating and gaining weight again.hope this helps, roy.

I expect my toy breed to be on 6-8 small meals a day when they have pups.  And I don't ever wean.

My girls are allowed ad lib access to their pups.  As it's a breed that doesn't usually leave home until 12 weeks, I find that my bitches give comfort suckles for ages.  And allowing them to eat pups food encourages them to eat more.  It's no problem to put more down for pups.

Lots of small meals is my advice.  What did the vet say about the vomiting?

My usual vet has broken his leg doing a sky jump for chairty so that was selfish of him to not be in the surgery on tap when i needed him lol lol lol,,so i saw the idiot vet ive never liked or agreed with.he just felt her tummy wanted me to re-worm her and keep her warm???hmm ok lol...and feed her on his vets tinned stuff to which i refused.no treatment no blood test no jab he didnt even weigh her!

Im not a vet or do i know what he should be doing but the sound hmmmm,im not keen on....

i said to myself if she doesnt gain weight(which funnily enough she looks like she is)id take her to my sister vet and see the other vet who runs both practices.
I made a nice chicken caserole and gave her some of the chicken juices on her meat this morning she lapped that up.

its looking fair at the mo,so fingers crossed.

for the record id not have wanted to wean the pups but i had to for her she looked so frail i had to,im now giving them milk with food and the porrigde ect.

iv never had such tiny puppiesto feed but thankfully theyre doing great!

didnt like theyre panacure worming this morning bless em lol.
mum seems to have more energy im noticing very small improvments ie: brighter eyes and ears are back standing!
so im hoping.
thank you all really really thank you

I know how bloody frustrating it is not to get your favourite vet when you want him.  They should ALWAYS be at the surgery when we need them.  :-)

Have you tried a little goats milk?  Unlikely to upset tummies, and usually well liked.

actually yes! im giving her it and shes loving it.it has to be luke warm though or shes not so keen but yes,
i didnt really like to say i was giving her that incase someone really frowned upon it,but i started giving her that the day we brought her home.(feeding puppies an all),id have given her goats milk durng pregnancy too but i know some dont like to.

:-)  :-)  :-)

You sound like me!  I once bought a bitch that was advertised as a brood.  It was evident to me that she was totally unacceptable for breeding.

I bought her so I could have her spayed.  So you are not on your own by a long chalk!  :-)

with my mini daxis ,as they are a longish breed they can lose weight so as soon as they have had their pups i feed them raw breast of lamb, works wonders for putting weight on you will notice a difference in a few days

Pleased to inform you all who have helped and encouaged me ;-) our lilly pop is well on her way to mending,i dont know how or why (im hoping a better fed diet) but she is no longer trying to steal our food from the dining table!!!!
if i showed you what she looked like when she was a bag of bones and then how she is now(no miracles shes still thin but getting it back on)ooooh the difference in the girl...

so ONCE AGAIN thanks to champdogs members who have replyed im feeling less stressed and a lot more confident for lillys future...jabs soon then walkies with the others yay!!!
