Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Why all the digging AFTER the birth
- By Onderka [gb] Date 01.11.10 20:03 UTC
Hi all

Megan is always digging up her bedding that i put in the box for her.  It worries me that she's gonna kick the pups cause she sometimes seems to be oblivious to them being there.  Why would she dig now, she didn't really dig much before labour, maybe she's making up for it now. LOL.  Could it be that she doesn't want to be in the whelping box now for some reason.  She just flicked the covers over the pups now while i'm typing this, good job it's just a muslin cloth that's doesn't weigh anything.

Thanks

Leanne

You're right to be worried, which is why she mustn't be left at all in these early days without someone watching her.

Vetbed is heavier, warmer and keeps dry, which is why it's used in whelping boxes. :)

She'd digging the help her discomfort as her insides are getting back to normal.

I'm always in the study with her, we have a nice sofa bed in there and a huge tv so i sleep there too.  You can tell from the rest of the house that i've not left here really since 3 days before she gave birth LOL.

I have waterproof lining in the box, then several layers of newspaper, then vet bed and then a thin muslin cloth so i can whip it off and put a fresh one on whenever i need to throughout the day.  I change the vet bed daily too.  I have noticed that when she digs the vet bed, lots of fluff comes off it and i'm forever clearing it out so the pups don't swallow any. Does anyone else have this problem?

I think that the muslin defeats the object of the Vetbed.  Liquid soaks through the top to the back so it's always dry to the touch.  The muslin won't do that and will stay wet - well damp with the tiny pees that they're doing at the moment! :)  I'd ditch the muslin. :)
The Vetbed will stop moulting when it's been washed a few times.
A friend (a big, male police officer) was sitting with his nrewly whelped litter and the bitch got up to turn and sat down very quickly before he could get onto the floor!  He heard a crack at she sat on a puppy. :( :(  He was there but just didn't move fast enough.  I've never heard a grown man sob like it...........  Vigilance is so important.

All bitches suffer pain as the uterus is contracting back.  Digging is the reaction to this discomfort.

Women suffer after pains aswell after giving birth...I certainly did and it is very painful.
Digging is natures way of helping them deal with the pain.
I never put any covering on top of the vet bed, defeats the object really of trying to keep the pups dry.
