Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Cairn eating for England - Whoops! I mean Scotland
- By andi [gb] Date 01.11.10 13:30 UTC
Hi!

I have an 11 week old Cairn pup who can eat for England. Worming has been done every 2 weeks, next due this Thursday. I am feeding her 4 times a day x 30grams with James Wellbeloved soaked in water and she is still starving after a total of 120grams a day.

Is this the right amount of food for her?
Should I be supplementing her diet in any other way?
Also when do you think I should cut down to 3 meals a day?

Many Thanks,

Andi

What tells you she's starving andi? maybe she's just a little greedy girl. ;)

Hi there,

It's the speed she throws her food down and the desperation to get to her food that worries me.

Mine at that age have been the same, gobble it down they do.
And mine now at 2yrs has a healthy appetite he cries as I'm lowering his bowl of food, he does, all excited like.

Maybe someone may be able to help you a little more though. :)

Mine usually hoover their food so fast it doesn't touch the sides! To me it's the sign of a healthy dog - if they ever leave any or not look for more I know they're ill.

Does she still have a nice covering over her ribs? She's reaching the age where she'll go through a growth spurt and start getting a bit 'leggy', so you'll need to increase her food proportionately. Are you weighing her every week?

My 11 wk pup teleports his food - no chewing involved!  He eats like it's the first food he's ever been offered and the last meal he'll ever have.  All completely normal :)

I've been comparing weights and dates with my older dog (I still have the diary I noted it in) and he went down to 3 meals at 18 weeks.  Although the same breed this pup is heavier by 3.4kg and I wonder if he might be ready to drop a meal a little sooner.  4 months seems about right.

I tend to look at poo as well as body size/covering to find the right amount of food, too loose and I'm probably over feeding.  How is your pup's output?

Have you checked portion sizes with your breeder?  If he/she kept a pup it might be useful to compare amounts to put your mind at ease.  I tend to make minor +/- adjustments to food every few days.  If you need to change amounts, a few grams will make quite a difference and gradual changes are best.

No supplements should be necessary if you are feeding a quality puppy food although as I feed my adult dogs a predominantly raw diet then my puppy also gets turkey necks, chicken wings and raw minces.

A person's character is revealed in his or her good behavior at table. A negative figure is usually depicted as lacking good table manners, such as eating and drinking too much, consuming impure food, choosing a wrong seat according to the hierarchy, and general immoderateness. Frequently such people are killed, and their bodies become food for the dogs (1 Kings 14:11, 21:23; Psalms 68:24; Jeremiah 15:3). Good and ideal people eat and drink moderately. They are modest and hospitable, and they carefully choose their food and their
company at table.

I am sure we are amongst the right company on this forum andi lol
