I seem to have  a load of films featuring a dog as the star attraction! K9, Homeward bound, Lassie, Greyfriars Bobby etc etc. Would anyone like to share their fave dog/animal film.
- By Dukedog Date 31.10.10 21:22 UTC
You've just named the only ones I could think of there, :)

Got to be Beethoven
- By MsTemeraire Date 31.10.10 21:28 UTC
Oooh nice thread.

I try to watch anything with dogs in (and cats) so I guess my fave has to be Cats & Dogs. Not seen the sequel though.
- By Dukedog Date 31.10.10 21:31 UTC
Look at you doggie Temeraire hello lovely!

Yup I stuck him up at long last! LOL. A few years back when he was about 18 mths old. He's even more handsome now of course.

> He's even more handsome now of course.

But of course he is, they are the best these sheps, but then we are biased. I still think he looks like he would get on with Duke.lol

Has to be Marley and Me.... so true to life even at the end when it is time to cross the bridge.... not a dry eye in the cinema when I went to watch it.. x
- By mountaindreams [gb] Date 31.10.10 21:44 UTC
Marley and me....so sad but gives an excellent insight into life with a labrador.
- By Dukedog Date 31.10.10 21:46 UTC
Not seen film but enjoyed the book.
- By Goldmali Date 31.10.10 21:47 UTC
The original Lassie (Liz Taylor) and the LATEST remake of it I think. But there are so many -one thing I try to collect is dog films on DVD. Loved Cats and Dogs as well (also not seen the sequel yet) if you're fast enough (or pause the DVD!) you will see a whole room full of Malinois in one scene, and of course both my breeds of cat!
- By suejaw Date 31.10.10 21:51 UTC

> even at the end when it is time to cross the bridge

Oh god, I keep telling myself not to watch the film and when I do not to watch the end, it does get me going each and every time. The film came out just after Bentley(yellow Lab) was pts, I was advised by all who had seen it to wait, which I did and glad I did, I was balling it even after a good year..

Hey, he is not what you think he is.... *wink* don't spoil the topic, but I'll give you a guess :)

I must have seen that fillum about 10 times and never saw that bit!!!!
- By ShaynLola Date 31.10.10 22:08 UTC
My absolute favourite is Bonbon el Perro...not everyone's cup of tea, granted, but I love that film.

Otherwise, it has to be Eight Below or Cats and Dogs.  There are so many doggie films that I can't watch because I tend to bawl my eyes out from start to finish  (I did with Eight Below too)...I couldn't even watch the Littlest Hobo as a kid because the thought of a dog with no home made me cry.  I'm that pathetic!
- By suejaw Date 31.10.10 22:11 UTC
I also like Turner and Hooch, not seen that in a while.

There's Something About Mary - For a split second there is a Bernese in it :-)

The film, with the litter of Goldies ending up in Alaska..Whats it called? Thats a sweet film.

Funny when he pees on the mans desk leg..
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 31.10.10 22:17 UTC
Eight Below for me - fab film. the ones I can never watch are Homeward Bound, the original and the new ones, and Old Yeller, as for Lassie just forget it! :-D I just can't bear to watch them. I still can't watch Bambi - even after Chandler's sarcastic comment on Friends 'yeah it's really sad when the guy stops drawing the deer!' . I had to be taken out of the cinema when I was about five because I wouldn't stop crying

One of my favourite animal films is Sea Biscuit - much more than a film about a racehorse - a real gem.
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 31.10.10 22:22 UTC
I like Dr Doolittle with Eddy Murphy, the dog in that is great, especially the bit with the thermometer :)
- By Dukedog Date 31.10.10 22:23 UTC
My fave not entirely dog film - Babe.
- By Zebedee [gb] Date 31.10.10 22:24 UTC
Kes - Has to be a classic!
- By MsTemeraire Date 31.10.10 22:29 UTC

Ahhhhhhhh now you mention it, I adore that film! really do. I don't own a DVD player but if i did that would probably be top of my list, above Cats & Dogs.

Has me in tears every time, so kindly and beautifully shot, and the owner of Bombon is such a gentle and lovely man.

Thank you for reminding me of that one!
- By jacksgirl [gb] Date 31.10.10 22:48 UTC
Not a doggie film but National Velvet is my favourite closely followed by Champions with John Hurt and Aldaniti :-)
- By Dukedog Date 31.10.10 22:52 UTC

I must have seen that fillum about 10 times and never saw that bit!!!! eek

It's at the dog training camp where they are getting ready to fight back against the cats, literally just a couple of seconds. :)
- By JeanSW Date 31.10.10 23:04 UTC
I'm with bilbobaggins.

I weep like a kid every time, even though I know what's going to happen.
- By briedog [gb] Date 01.11.10 07:33 UTC

- By Norman [gb] Date 01.11.10 07:53 UTC
Turner and Hooch for me I think it is so funny.
- By annee [gb] Date 01.11.10 08:13 UTC
Kes for me too...along with Seabiscuit.
- By tadog [gb] Date 01.11.10 08:23 UTC
showing my age now but 'Old Yella' was the fist film I ever saw and has been imprinted on my heart ever since. non doggy it would be any 'Black Beauty' or 'Orca'.
- By mastifflover Date 01.11.10 08:39 UTC
A film not mentioned in this thread 'Hotel For Dogs'. It is a kids film, so the film itself isn't that riviting, but it is full of all different breeds of dogs :) I had to buy it when I spotted it as it has a brindle English Mastiff (just like my Buster) on the front cover!! :)

With the 'extras' after the film, there is a short section on how they got the dogs to do all the tricks in the film :) Great for a doggy lovers, but not especially as a film (good to watch with the kids though), I have seen it a few times just to make sure I spotted all the dogs in it!
- By cracar [gb] Date 01.11.10 09:10 UTC
Hatchi.  Me and OH wept like babies at that lovely story of an old faithful Akita being shown like they should behave.  Proud and aloof not aggressive!  With Marley and me, I didn't get it.  That dog had a great life, what's to be sad about?
I love fox and the hound and my first boy spaniel is going to be called Todd after that dog.  I'd also love a big dog cooper!
and Homeward bound(either new or old doesn't matter, I still wept till I'm sick).
Lassie( my gran had a 'lassie' when I was growing up)
The new dog films just don't cut it!
- By suejaw Date 01.11.10 09:12 UTC
Need to get Hatchi out, looks a very good film.

I have to admit I love Brother Bear, that film I saw for the first time on a plane and I was sobbing, to make matters worse I was alone on the flight..
- By mastifflover Date 01.11.10 09:16 UTC

> With Marley and me, I didn't get it.  That dog had a great life, what's to be sad about?

The sad part is him dying. Of course all living things die, but the film really got over how much of a wrench it is to loose a deeply loved pet - a member of the family. The loss of our own oldie was still fresh in our minds when we watched it, so it really hit us :( :(
- By howarth997 Date 01.11.10 09:20 UTC
Homeward Bound & Turner & Hooch :D
- By joanne 1000 [gb] Date 01.11.10 09:25 UTC

Oh mine too!!!!  I remember when lots of people on the forum had seen it on Sky TV, but I missed it!  Thankfully Australian tv is a little behind and it was shown out here a couple of months ago - I loved it!

Other favourites include Ring of bright water, Tarka the Otter, Lassie come home (howl howl howl!), The Big Blue (not entirely about the animals, but had a HUGE effect on my and my passion for dolphins), the Grizzly Adams movies, and - more of a documentary - Mike Tomkies Last of the Scottish Wildcats, The Black Stallion (oh my how I loved that horse, in fact I might have to try and get this on DVD!!), Run Wild/Run Free, Black Beauty.... oh goodness, I could go on & on!!!

Have to agree ShaynLola, even the music from Littlest Hobo brings a tear!
- By LucyMissy [gb] Date 01.11.10 10:28 UTC
For me it's got to be Old Yeller - I love it!!

Although I don't know anyone else who has actually seen it (outside of my family) but I'm sure there'll be some on here!!
- By Paula Dal [gb] Date 01.11.10 10:46 UTC
101 Dalmatians, 102 Dalmatians.........spot the theme here? ;-) ha ha ha
Actually, I love them all but it took me over a year of having the DVD of Marley and Me before I plucked up the courage to watch it and BAWLED my eyes out!!! :-(
My daughter had to watch it in 3 stages as she kept turning it off every time she thought it was getting too sad.

OR, being as Phar Lap was an Australian horse, from Victoria I think (?), there seems to be more Australian websites that sell the DVD, I can always post it over to you!

>> disney films are great

Oh I agree, my personal fave is the Aristocats, followed by any one of: Finding Nemo, Lady and the Tramp, Lion King, the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast.

I haven't finished the Marley and Me book as I was sure I was going to cry, and on the basis I do most of my reading on the daily commute, I didn't want to blub in front of strangers. Same applies to the James Herriot books, I used to re-read them and knew when a sad bit was coming up so would skip some pages. Loved the All creatures great and small TV show.
- By colliepam Date 01.11.10 18:20 UTC
oh god,i took my kids to see the fox and the hound, and cried all the way through it,too sad,and thats just a cartoon!mind you,i also bawled my eyes out when i took them to a small circus, that visited the area, someone was leading a young elephant round the ring,it just seemed demeaning and wrong. So knowing how such things tear my heart out,i wont watch animal films or read animal books, unless some understanding soul has.checked them out first, and given them a  "mum safe"award!Well,i cant help it!
- By suejaw Date 01.11.10 18:25 UTC
