Health / Pink patches on paws - constant licking, possible burn?
Hi,
Mt Gr has a couple of pink patches on her back 2 paws. This started about an hour ago and all she wants to do is lick them and kick them on the cold floor. I have held them in icy water for half an hour, about to do the same again. We do have an open fire on, but there is a firegaurd and she does stay well away. I have taken her out on a walk about 2 hours ago and she played in a stream. Am at a loss as they are quite big pink patches on her black paws. Any advice on what to do tonight much appreciated.
Thx!

I'd have thought she may have run through something that has irritated them.
I'd give her a piriton or put some anti - histamine cream on it and see how she goes with that.
Thank you - I have just searched for my piriton - how much do I give her, she is a 4 month old Retriever? Thank for your help!
Yikes, I wouldn't be giving my dog any medication without first giving the vet a call particularly such a young dog.
If you don't know what has caused the irritation/burn...then I would only be bathing frequently in cool water until I had sought professional advice :)
She may have rubbed them on stones in the stream - easy for her not to notice if the water is cold. Paws are still very soft at this age. I wouldn't medicate with anything and I can't see that dunking them in icy water will do much to improve things and may just draw her attention to them. Some dogs are very attentive to wet paws anyway
Are they tender to touch? What is her reaction when you handle the paws?
Dry her paws thoroughly, if she'll let you, and let her settle a while. See how she is later but in the meantime you could check the opening times for your vet, just in case. You may find that they have an emergency service on Sundays, and won't charge an out of hours fee!
Thank you all, she suddenly calmed down and fell asleep and has not been near them since. Asked my friend this morning and she mentionned the banks of the stream have lots of stinging nettles in but quite hard to see as so overgrown. Seems to fit the bill, when I said to my husband when he got home, he said parts of her paws were pink when we had her, and then I remembered them, just in the panic of trying to help her I thought they had changed colour!! Thx all.
It won't hurt to get some boric powder and rub a little inbetween the pads to rule out mites, that can discolour there, mainly from the chewing. My Goldie has red between the paws nad she ges wet a lot.
Hope it helps.

ha ha some pads are pink in parts not always one colour.. .sounds like she has run in nettles to me or some other plant that has caused a slight irritation.
a product handy to have in is hibiscrub available in chemists add to water and hold the paw in for a few mins then dry .
Dont think you need to do this if she has stopped biting.
Also have some Thornit always handy around the toes and outside the ear to prevent mites.
