Hello all i am just a bit miffed here i have an experianced stud dog, who has sired over 20 pups. he has never had a problem before in tying. we introduced the bitch on day 9 of her season and he mounted straight away. but couldnt hit the spot. we have tried them everyday since day 9 she is now on day 14 and she is still flagging and he is still mounting but for some reason they havnt tyed. he has hit the spot 3 times she yelp but no tye. has any one else had problemes like this. he has been 100% upto now. as long as she is still letting him mount should i just keep trying or give up on them ??

Chances are she is still not ready.

Or if she is a maiden the hymen is still intact or there is another structural problem. If you wait and there is still not a successful mating then she should be checked by a vet.

we had one that the bitch was just a little short for the dog and had to have her standing on a raised area in the garden, could this be the same with your two?

thanks for your replys. she is well ready she is standing perfectly for him. we have had 3 slipped matings where she has let out a yelp but pulled away.I am a big beleiver in not getting involved too much and letting them do it naturally. I have checked today and she is still very swollen. but he doesnt seem as intrested maybe we have missed our chance this time.Do you think i should still charge a studd fee for a slipped mating.I have never had to do anything like this before because he has alawys been 100%.I am more than happy to give her another try on her next season for free if he hasnt caught her ?

can you see anything just inside the vulva of the bitch ? ie polyp that could be obstructing his way?

if you open her vulva slightly ( with sterile gloved hands of course) can you see a little white ball thingy? with regards to paying for a slip mating, i wouldnt be happy to pay for that either but have a signed contract between yourselves where if she has indeed fallen then the payment will be made?

Any obstruction will be inside and could possibly be felt - the hymen may be quite high up.  If there was a problem with the bitch then I would expect the stud dog owner to advise the bitch owner if they aren't experienced themselves.

I would suggest holding on to the Kennel Club litter registration form (although the pups could possibly still be registered on line?) and hand it over when the pups are born and the stud fee paid then. :)

if they havnt had your boys number they will let you know if shes cought, so you can give them his number and you take payment for this.

Some bitches will yelp when the dog first enters her, it is more out of surprise than an obstruction. I would hold her head so that she can't get away if you are sure that there is no physical reason to prevent him doing his job.

Likewise, otherwise the dog (if he's a gentleman) will be deterred next time.

That sounds like she isn't ready yet as the vulva should soften and become  bit flacid (to facilitate mating).

10 years ago my bitch was mated by a dog. He entered her and she yelped he came out. Stud owner didn't take a fee as she said we wouldn't get pups. 60 days later I had 6 bitch pups in the whelping box!!!

I contacted the stud owner and sent her a chq in return for the green form to register the pups.

I've just visited a litter of 9 lovely puppies - the result of a very brief slip mating.

I signed the green form for someone back in the summer.  They let me know that she whelped ok, but didn't say that they were registering online. 

I received a letter from the kennel club, asking me to confirm that my boy was used.

Definitely not.
