Topic Dog Boards / General / Question for microchip implanters only please

Hi, I know there are a few folk on here who microchip so I'd like to ask a bit of advice. I chipped my litter of pups when they were just under 8 weeks. I sadly waved goodbye to my last pup today (18 weeks) and routinely checked her microchip and was a bit gutted to find it had moved! It's now sitting about 2" down from where I implanted it, on her left shoulder.

What would you do?

I haven't been in touch with microchip company for advice as will probably have to wait until Monday. I'm guessing I can either just forget it and maybe monitor it's position over the next few months (local owner) or I can re chip with a new one. I've obviously made an error when chipping else it wouldn't have moved, but my concern is if it's moved in this time, where it's going to end up. I'm also concerned about putting an additional chip in.

Thanks.

Wouldn't worry me at all -it has happened to the great majority of cats and small dogs that I have chipped, but never large dogs (not even when done as pups). That particular position seems to be the one where they end up, I've never had one move further. Next time you may want to try inserting it a bit higher upon the neck, actually further forward than they advice you to, I have found that helps them stay in place.

Yep agree! i wouldnt be worried either.i have a 9 month old pup whos chip has migrated but only to the shoulder, its stayed there.
If it really bothers you and you are worried ask the new owners to check its possition when having a check up at vets ect.
But like already said its more commen to have them to move there than to sit exactly where theyre first implanted.x

Hi, Many thanks MarianneB (nearly direct messaged you to ask you this one!!) and tamara. I'll stop worrying. Pup is going to a local person and someone I'll be staying in regular touch with so I can see her training progress, so I'll take my scanner along on occasional visits just to check it stays where it is.

Marianne - I will have a look at where I'm going for the implant position and see if I can safely go a little further forward. Have to admit I am terrified of going too far forward (friend has a dog that was routinely vaccinated by vet - went straight into brain :-( ). Mind, that really must have been an idiot vet as you've got to be quite high to be near the brain. They're medium breed so we should be ok.

Many thanks to you both, I'll trot off and find something else to worry about now!! :-)

You also have to get through the skull.

In some countries the usual position for implanting microchips is the cheek.
