I kept a pup from my lab bitch in Feb so she is now 81/2 months old. My bitch and the stud dog both have very low hip scores. and I have taken great care of her regarding correct feeding, not over exercise etc. This pup sits with her leg splayed out to the side, the vet suggested this may indicate poor hips, has anyone noticed this in pups and did they go on to have good or poor hip scores?

Splays out to one side, seems infrequently to sit evenly. She may start to, especially if told to sit, but then always splays out one leg. I wish I could draw a picture because it is quite difficult to describe.

I know exactly what you mean, and as far as I am concerned you have nothing to worry about.I`ve always been given to understand that this is called a `puppy sit`.I have a large breed and my puppies have done this all the time.Looks like they are sitting
on one buttock.
Carry on as you have been i.e. careful with exercise and diet keeping an eye on the weight and you should have nothing to worry about.
Can`t understand why your vet should think it an hip problem????

Haveto agree, mine do it all the time, especially when in a lazy mood! They all have pretty good hip scores! They also lay flat on their sto0machs looking like frogs, I have heard that this is bpth a sign of good and bad hips, depending on who I am listening too:D

Always called this a puppy sit too, usually disappears as pup matures,

well I hope and presumed it was puppy sit or I have problems with my 11 month old ;)

She always sits on one buttock (unless waiting for a treat when she sits as straight and pretty as possible lol) :rolleyes:

My labs do this too and all our hip scores have been under 12 total. Don't worry about it.

Moose does a really good impression of a Lab rug when she lies down !

I keep telling her that we make her into one when she goes !!

Two of my labs have the 'frog leg' syndrome, it looks almost painful when they lay down! I was concerned as when I took my dog to be hip scored the vet told me he had banana legs. I waited for the score quite anxiously and it came back 6/5 so I was relieved. The funny thing is my dog that sits perfectly straight and doesn't prostrate herself on the floor has a score of 8/8 so I don't think it is a problem, more of a quirk.

They look funniest when they all lie like that in an arc watching my son eat. I soon spoil their fun and tell them to leave the room!

Do yours move along the ground like that too, mine riggle along like a very slow snake. JH

one of my labs does a 'frog' sit, with legs splayed out either side - hip score 2/7. Other one sits lop sided like you describe. She's 18months and hasn't yet been scored, but hope to have her done next year. Other parent was 2/2 so I hope she'll have a low score.

It is bred into Labradors to get themselves comfortable when they sit. It is not unusual for mine to have to sit for an hour plus at a time and the same applies to other working Labs. Anna has always sat this way and she was scored as 2/2. The short answer is dont worry, it means nothing.

Just an update on this, thought it may be of interest. Had the result of the hip score today and her score is 4:4 so you were right to say not to worry. I am very pleased.
