Topic Dog Boards / Health / Mastitis in young GR.

My young GR has got mastitis...she is 14months and had her 1st season in july.
My vet has given her antibiotics and told me to bathe it with a warm compress and plenty of exercise and she always has that anyway.
I noticed it yesterday on her tummy all lumpy around her teat area and more in the fatty folds of skin.
She shows no signs of nesting that im aware off...no toy collecting.
Is there anything else I should be aware off.
My vet wants to see her in a week....just in case its more serious...hopefully its not.
Thanks.

I do know that raw cabbage leaves placed over the affected area does help with mastitis in breast feeding Mums, I don't know whether it would work with dogs but it might be worth a try to ease the discomfort.   Hope she is feeling better soon.

I'm not going to be any help with doggy mastitis but having had it 3 times with 3 boob fed babes I'd say that the anti bio's will probably sort it, they did for me.

As a feeding mum with mega boobs the pain was worse cos of the weight of the boob and no support bra in the world helped that, do they do doggy support bra's by the way for the poor love.

They may well do a doggy bra lol
I hope it wont hang about to long for her...its quite hot tonight to touch.
Ive had many bitches and never had one had mastitis.

And people can get mastitis without breast feeding or being pregnant apparently so maybe the same with dogs.  I hope she is feeling better today.

Thanks Perry, slight improvement....still lumpy but softer and fine in herself.

The softer the better :) a hot hard inflamed boob is hell so I hope your girl is on the mend.
