Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / my wee 2 week old pup is dying? UPDATED pup ok
- By thrones [gb] Date 26.10.10 13:36 UTC
as you may know i am having to hand rear 5 pups from birth the mum wasnt accepting then she did but for only a few hours
then she walked away again, so i am hand rearing the last two weeks,
i feed on demand and all the pups are putting on weight nicley

two days ago alittle one kept crying and looked very bloated the belly was \VERY tight and big,
so i thought colic

i gave colic drops and she was a constipated ,so i gave her liquid parrifin

she then pooped but she squealed for hours, and eventually she settled

she isnt keen to feed at all , rejecting the bottle
and groans most of the time ,her breathing is faster that the rest as well

i gave her some golden surop to keep her sugar levels up , about a dropper full
she is a large toy breed

i contacted my vet who thinks i should let nature take its coarse and says im doing evrything they would as i a am giving her drinks of water when i can

i have glucose here , shoould i give that instead of the water?

i am on the sofa dedicated to these wee pups i havent been out of the house in 3 weeeks

any advise???? please!

i dont want to loose her,
but her breathing is becoming very laboured

hi thrones the sad thing is we do loose pups i have and many here have :( ,at only 2weeks old i wouldnt be giving to much water but when u do add some glucose to it ,not to much tho, the milk maybe its to rich for her and thats why shes getting constipated? do you make sure you clean her before she feeds? this is how mum would do it, she will cry because she wants milk but its best to get them pooing before and not after ,you are doing all you can and i hope the little 1 pulls though (((hugs))) i know how you feel ive been there ,the worry makes you ill too, so try and look after yourself also xx

What are you feeding her on?  I would not use golden syrup - honey or glucose would be much better.  Sounds like the puppy is having trouble weeing and pooing.  Are you imitating the dam and making sure the puppy wee's after each feed and poo's around 3/4 times a day by taking cotton wool dampened in warm water and rubbing the tummy and bottom area.  If a puppy doesn't wee & poo it will quickly die.  You could add Infacol, about a dropper, to one of its feeds to releive tummy ache.  If she was constipated, which it sounds very much as though she was then it would cause her tummy to be tight.  Don't give too much liquid parafin as it can stop the absorption of vitamins & minerals etc.  Personally I would feed 1ml of milk substitute for every 1oz in weight and feed every two hours rather than on demand.  If the puppy is weak it may not demand food and in turn become even weaker. Are the puppies in a warm box make sure they keep warm as puppies are unable to digest milk if their body temp drops.  Another thought is have you checked that the milk substitute isn't too rich the puppies don't want to get dehydrated you can check this by gently pinching a fold of skin on the top of its neck and see if it goes back to 'normal'  if the pinch skin stays up then it is most likely dehydrated and not getting enough fluids.  Hope this helps
All the best and fingers crossed for the little one.

Is there any reason you cannot get them feeding off Mum at all, even if you have to hold and muzzle her.

thank you for all the replies,

i am doing all that is said, except holding the mum ,her milk has now gone

i made sure i done every single thing,
especially peeing and pooping as i understand how important that is,

thank you for the tip on the honey

i took her to two vets yesterday

the first asked me what i thought was wrong, then said its probable a twisted bowel,constipation/colic, or phenmonia

i asked which one, but he couldnt answer and said she was too young too operate
and her prognosis wasnt good

i took her to another vet who took her temerature/the first vet didnt, and gave me, an antibiotic
i also asked for a catheter to tube feed if needed

lasr night she settled well, and took a great feed ,
i gave her a dropper of syrup of figs to get her going,
and this morning she looks much better, she shivered a bit, took a bottle and settled back down. she has lost some weight due to not feeding , but im very hopefull, im bonding a lot with all of them, and i will make sure they all have the best care

thanks again

I had to subsidise my pups at 2 weeks as their mom was very poorly and milk was in short supply. I tried whelpi/RC starter milk and they weren't keen, but adding a little goats milk made all the difference.  They much prefer that to the puppy milk, even now and they are 6 weeks.

Hope your little pup continues to improve.  Tis heartbreaking when you lose them :(

Been on tender hooks for you.  What good news so far, hope she continues to improve.  You've done well so far.  Wondering whether to start bets that you keep this little one.

Hugs better for her and you of course.  She been in my thoughts.

Will keep everything crossed for you, but good to hear the little one is seeming a bit better. Our puppies are three and a half weeks old, but have been happily drinking goats milk and egg yolks for over a week now. Their mum loves it too, and from the weight that's going on them I don't think it's hurting anyone!
