hi , its been a while since my last post. i feed my akita arden grange lamb dry with naturesmenu as a topper. she eats it but leaves some at times and never seems excited at dinner time. i was gonna make a large pot of stew with chicken, beef, veg, rown rice and freeze then defrost when i need it and use this as the topper, i think she would prefer this. would this be ok? any hints, tips, info would be greatly appreciated
I make a chicken stock for the dogs by boiling the carcass of a chicken til the meat falls away, picking the bones out, and freezing the gloopy meat jelly stock that remains. I don't include veg at this stage as it's a very long cooking time and they'd get no value from it. If I want to give veg I blitz it in the food processor and mix it with the stock when cool or just serve it direct from the freezer. I wouldn't think that rice is necessary either if you are feeding AG, although chicken and rice is very good for dogs with dodgy tummies.
As someone else has said do not use a commercial stock or add any salt to your water. I will boil plain raw chicken for them from time to time but I generally roast a chicken for us and they get what's left so this means there might be some butter or black pepper in the mix but but not enough for me to be concerned
I freeze anything like this in silicone muffin trays which gives an ideal portion size. My dogs are predominantly raw fed but I still like to give the odd bowl of kibble and the chicken gloop is a real favourite :) You can try tinned sardines in oil too - mine would NEVER say no to these!
