Please can anyone give me any advise.....
I mated my bitch 29/9 and 1/10  all was well until a day later she started with diarrhoea sickenss and would n't eat.  She went to the vets who put her on a course of antibiotics....she picked up and started eating and the diarrhoea cleared up but she was still bleeding heavily or what seemed more than normal, this could of been because she is usually so clean but she was feeling poorly and couldnt be bothered.   She then started to pant alot so back to the vet and he exteneded the course of a/biotics.  The bleeding stopped when her normal season would of and she seemed happy in herself again.  He did scan her and said there was no infection...so all good but no sign of pups (he did say it was to early to see any).   I am waiting till day 30 (this Sat for her scan) and she has been absolutely fine in herself, until yesterday she went off food again ( she can be a picky eater anyway) but now has diarrohea again. she is back at the vets later today. But i am not filled with confidence from my vet and there are no other vets near us that i havent heard bad things about neither.

Questions
Does diarrohea and sickness harm the pups?
Do you think she'll have lost the litter? if i ask for a scan today is it to early to see if she has any pups in there?
If she has lost them wil she absorb them herself at this stage or will she have dead pups in her that could harm her?  I know that sounds selfish but my bitch is the main priority ?
Any other advise i.e on food etc that i can try to help her with will be greatly appreciated

Hi orangedog
i can only answer from what ive been though with my dogs :)

my dog got the runs and was very sick about 2 weeks before she had her pups ,all pups were born healthy and a good size.
i had a girl scanned on dy 30 to see at least 6 pups but when it came to her having them she only had 3 so she lost the others (reabsorbed them) and she was fine too 3 big beautiful pups.
your girl is at the morning sickness stage that can last from 2days upto pups being born but nornaly goes after aweek, we gave our girls what ever they would eat! cooked chicken beef lamb even a slice of toast lol anything to get them though that stage ,and then they would start to eat for england lol ,
when breeding for me and so many its our dogs that come 1st isnt it we are risking them BUT will do everything for them to make sure there as safe as can be, good luck, if i was you id wait alittle longer for scan just incase your vet isnt that good at it xx

Thanks White lilly, I think i will wait im just so worried something is going on in there that shouldn't be and i dont want to lose my dog, i hate seeing her like this.....I'll see what the vet says it will prob just be more a/biotics and chicken and rice, which she is refusing anyway.  Ive tried all sorts pasta scones ryvita rice chick eggs she just looks at me with disgusted.  i just wish i knew if she was pregnant then they can use different a/biotics and medication on her to sort her out.   Fingers crossed as you say it is just morning sickness and she'll go on to have health pups

- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.10.10 12:31 UTC

- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.10.10 12:33 UTC

My girls always start bleeding again after mating, sometimes quite heavily too, I was told that this is a good sign of being pregnant....not sure how true that is, but we've never had one miss yet.  The first time it happened my vet put my girl on Synulox from 2 weeks post mating till 2 weeks post whelping, basically the whole of her pregnancy,  she had a lovely healthy litter of 7 good sized strong pups.
- By orangedog [gb] Date 25.10.10 12:39 UTC
Oh bless her! She is drinking, won't touch the rehydration liquid at all, but still drinking water she has no other signs of dehydration so fingers crossed.  I had the pre mate test done on my baby because at day 12 there still appeared to be no diference in her season it wsnt until day 16 she was ready to breed.  I think she just likes to be awkward and keep me on my toes.  Which i might add she is doing a brillant job of and we're only in our 3rd week lol
- By orangedog [gb] Date 25.10.10 12:41 UTC
Thats good to hear Sharonm,  What is synolux?  Do you think i shold be concerned from the diarrohea as in pup wise i know its not good for any dog, but ive been told diarrohea in early stages of the pregnancy it harmful to the pups
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 25.10.10 12:41 UTC
My girl bleeds right through a season, mated or not. She also had infections post season several times, mated or not. But we did get 2 small litters nearly 3 years apart, so don't lose hope!
- By SharonM Date 25.10.10 12:45 UTC
Synulox is an anti-biotic, is your girl eating anything different?  My girls seem to go off their food really quickly after mating, so end up eating richer foods ie. heart etc. which does make their motions quite loose.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.10.10 12:45 UTC
i dont think the runs your dogs has is anything to do with looseing her babies, it sounds like a bug or the ab's going though her,the runs at the end before whelping begians is like us mums we clear out ready to give birth (sorry lol) x
- By orangedog [gb] Date 25.10.10 14:17 UTC
Thankyou Lucydogs and so nicely put whitelilly lol i was expecting it before she whelps but not yet. she has to be different.
- By orangedog [gb] Date 25.10.10 14:22 UTC
I can't recall what a/biotics she was on the vet said they were safe for a pregnant bitch?  As for her eating she is always fussy anyway so sppends most of her time with her dry mix plus rice, pasta, cheese, egg or chicken mixed in so she will eat it.  Usually if she goes off food she will still eat a bowl of plain pasta and sometimes chick and rice.  I usualy only give her plain pasta as a last resort so she has something in her tum as it really doesnt have any goodness in it just loads of carbs. I was going to try her on liver as the breeder said it good for them but at the moment darent as she has such bad diarrohea.
- By Goldmali Date 25.10.10 14:26 UTC
Surely liver can only be fed as a treat (i.e. in small amounts) -isn't excess amounts of vitamin A  toxic in dogs as it definitely is in cats?
- By orangedog [gb] Date 25.10.10 14:32 UTC
Not sure i was told by the breeder to give her a small amount a day from the 3-4th week, because its full iron ???? do u not agree?

Off to vets we go so wish me luck i'll update you all when i'm back and probably have more questions....Sorry

Thank you all for your advise and support
- By white lilly [gb] Date 25.10.10 15:05 UTC
ive also been told the same about liver i only feed it has a treat when trianing and made into live cake.
- By orangedog [gb] Date 25.10.10 15:52 UTC
Well she gave her more antibiotics (clavaseptin) and said she thinks its an upset gut from something she shouldnt have eaten (she has eaten nothing different to normal) rather than pregnancy related? Says its to early to scan her before friday which will be 28th/30th day? So we'll have to wait and see just done her some scambled egg and pasta waiting for it to cool and then see if she'll eat that for me, she hasn't been sick since 11am although her stomach is cherning away so loudly it keeps waking her up lol.

I won't bother with the liver then thank you for that info.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.10.10 23:36 UTC
I ahve never fed more than abotu 4 ounces of liver a week to a 20kg dog.
- By orangedog [gb] Date 26.10.10 18:10 UTC
Thanks for all the info on the liver ...she wont be getting any, she'd probably just turn her nose up anyway she is that fussy.

She hasnt bee sick today and has managed to keep 3 small meals down today of chicken and rice, scrambled egg and dog bisc and dog bisc plus cheese still not been for a no2 but think she is that empty needs to restock beforehand lol

She is booked in on Fri for a scan so i'll let you all know.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 26.10.10 18:53 UTC
sounds like shes turned a coner ,graet news! and the best of luck for friday xx

Don't forget the pilchards in tomato sauce, one with some complete or rice will usually be eaten with relish.
- By orangedog [gb] Date 27.10.10 14:45 UTC
OMG that sounds revolting ...things we do for our dogs lol.  I will try her on it once she settles back down
- By Nova Date 27.10.10 16:03 UTC
It is well known as one of things 99% of dogs will give up their starvation strike for. You may have one that will not go mad for a pilchard but most can be persuaded to smash through doors for one. By the way I like them too.
- By orangedog [gb] Date 27.10.10 17:19 UTC
Well i am going Asda tomorrow so i'll pick some up for her and if she carries on like she is she'll get a nice treat tomorrow.
Nova are they tinned and do they come in the sauce? I'm not a fish lover so I don't know?
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 27.10.10 17:25 UTC
yes they are and mackerel is also good... these are both found in the tin fish section with tuna etc.
- By Nova Date 27.10.10 17:28 UTC
Yep, they are tinned and they seem to prefer the tomato sauce to the oil, don't know why as it is not what one would expect.
- By orangedog [gb] Date 27.10.10 17:36 UTC
Ok thanks both i shall give it a whirl
- By orangedog [gb] Date 28.10.10 11:25 UTC
Told you she was fussy, she looked at me as though i was trying to poision her.  The other dogs loved them and i mean loved them about lost my arm lol
She is happy eating her normal dry mix though so i'm happy she is eating and keeping it down x
- By white lilly [gb] Date 28.10.10 19:29 UTC
LOL she does sound like a dog i had afew years ago :( i couldnt get her to eat with different foods ...but once she had her pups omg! she didnt stop eating :)
- By orangedog [gb] Date 29.10.10 10:37 UTC
Just got back from the vets. He scanned her no puppies where found:(  He did say  because she was mated about 8pm on the 29/9 and then about 4pm on the 1/10 it amy take a couple of days for her to take in whcih case she wont be 28 or 30days she may only be 24 days?  And the pups maybe hiding she goes back next thurs which would be her 35th day from the 1st mating does this sound right?
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 29.10.10 16:24 UTC
My girl was mated on 30/9 and I am not getting her scanned till Monday so it may have just been too early for your girl. good luck with the next scan
- By orangedog [gb] Date 30.10.10 08:28 UTC
Thats what i'm hoping but i would of thought you would of seen something?

I'll close this thread now to avoid duplicating replies as you've got another quite similar thread running.
