Topic Dog Boards / General / Indestructive bed????

Hi all, I just wondered if there was such a thing??? My 14 month old is a real chewer. He sleeps in a crate at night but whenever I put anything remotely comfortable and warm in he just chews it to bits. We've gone through umpteen cushions, blankets etc. I tried wrapping the last dog cushion inside an old duvet cover but he shredded the lot. It's not the money that bothers me its the fact he tends to eat some of it too. We have found poo with bits of stuffing and duvet cover in it!! Not good. Over the summer months he ended up just sleeping in the crate without any luxuries (to be honest he seems to prefer that as even with bedding he tends to scoop it all to one side and sleep on the tray). Some would say just leave him without but I am just a bit concerned with the cold weather coming that it will be too cold for him. We have tiled floors so not much heat!!!
I'm sure we can't be the only ones that have had this problem and just wondered if anyone had any solutions. One thing I had thought was having some thick foam cut to size and placing that underneath the crate tray to lift it a little. I already put a blanket underneath to try to absorb some of the cold.
Any advice/suggestions would be great. Thank you

Have you thought of a raised bed? I would think they are fairly unchewable. I've got a couple and my dogs like them, but I do put a bit of vetbed on top for added comfort which would probably be chewed by your boy.

i have a very bad chewer !!!!!! she's 2 1/2 now and her latest effort was only last week :( however she doesn't chew vet bed so you may be ok with that :)

Tuffies makes a really tough tuffie :-) Not cheap but should last for several dogs.

We have several dogs that are terrible chewers that come into the baording kennels and they now bring tuffie beds. Not a single one has managed to chew or damage them!! Owners say they are definately worth the money. :)

Same here, two of mine have tug of war with vetbed, it ends up half the size and only good for the bin. A younger dog I put in kennels went in with NO bedding but they felt sorry for her and gave her some - she was pooing it out for days afterwards. I was NOT happy!

I always found a carpet tile or off cut sprayed with anti chew a good starting point.

I'll second Tuffie, they are very hardy and yes mine use Vetbeds as a chew toy.

i have had tuffies for the last 6 years but guess what the puppy spainish water dog loves to chew it an get the suffing out even with a cover over it,

Presumably that's the ordinary tuffie Briedog and not the really tough tuffie with the plastic surround?
- By briedog [gb] Date 23.10.10 12:50 UTC
yes the flat bed with duvet soft filling in side

plastic surround one i was told is more for puppies when with mum.

My Sheltie is a bedding shredder so we got her one of the raised dog beds that Pedlee gave the link for. All the dogs are obsessed with it and so far the fabric hammock bit is still unchewed.
I like to stock up on cheapy pet fleeces from poundland and old rags and put one of those on top so she has something to direct her chewing onto (won't touch toys). If your boy is eating the blankets though I wouldn't let him have one, its not worth the risk IMO of it tangling in his belly. If it gets super cold you could put straw or snoozeflakes in his crate for warmth and comfort, I doubt he'd eat either of those and the crate would keep most of it contained, so just some extra sweeping.

How about a thick piece of carpet offcut, cut to fit the tray? I know what a problem chewing is, I've had one!

I'm about to invest in some Tuffie beds for my two adults and the pup will have one too when she comes out of the crate and can be trusted.

I don't think the plastic Tuffie bed is for mum/pups, they advertise it as an indestructible dog bed for chewers. Very pricey, and not sure about fitting into a crate really.

Tough one! :)

Is the truffle bed easy to wash? Do they ship to saskatchewan?

My one dog chews everything. We bought a sofa bed but since we do not roll it out for them T-Bone does not chew it... Wouldn't mind something that looks like the Truffle bed but where I can add my own bedding for washing.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I am thinking the raised bed may be the best option. Like the look of the tuffie bed but unsure if it would fit in the crate. You're right Pedlee - he would chew anything I put on top for extra comfort. I just really worry about him getting a blockage.
I am going to order a raised bed today and see how he gets on.
Thanks again everyone - I know I can always rely on Champdoggers for help x x
