hello, basically my girl was in labor for 15 hours
she needed about4 oxytocin injections
1 pup died

she rejected the puppies
luckily i was about to hold her enough to get the colostrum into the puppies

i was prepared for anything and had bottles and lactol  ready just in case

i fed the pups for four long days and nights ,each one differently, and some sucked too hard and the milk would come out their noses

i had 8 bottles all different teat flows,

but on the fourth day they all had milk coming out their noses,
i tried syringe feeding very slowly but they sucked harder than i pushed the plunger and all had milk out their noses

so i read and read and read, and it said that it could cause pneumonia if the milk got into the noses,
to be honest i didnt want to tube feed as their noses where tiny,

so in desperation ,i brought the mum back in and ignored her, but ready to jump in if she attacked the pups

she went over and sniffed at them then started took them, and sort of head counted them
then jumped in the bed

one of the hungry pups made its way over  to her#and she lay down, eventually they all came over and they fed of her#

she was very accepting,
i was worried that she had no milk at this stage, but when i checked they all had wet milky mouths
and slept contentedly after#

she has been with them now for two days feeding them

she doesnt look as though she as much milk

she isnt drinking very well, and her teats look deflated

should i give her the lactol? or anything else to bring the milk in?

im at a loss?

thank you so much for any help

im sleeping on the sofa with her, and i dont leave er side unless she is being watched by my husband

she also doesnt clean them thoroughly , i would finish them for her,

and one has got a couple of boils on their belly ,s ive put some sudo cream on them,

if pups are still sleeping after feeds and are gaining weight dont worry, still try giving her drinks in the bed when shes with pups some milk in her water should do the trick!...sounds like shes trying to be a good mummy bless her! x

It would have been betteer to not separate her from the pups, and to supervise her to let them feed as often as possible even if she was not interested.

A friend had a bitch with no milk for a week, but she was looking after the pups, and her milk came in slowly and she took over from the bottle feeds.

The reason she had no milk was that the Vet thought there were no pups and gave her Galastop to dry up her milk, and then she went on to whelp!!!

Sometimes the mum looks as though she has no milk, but she has. Weigh the pups every day to see if they are gaining weight. If she is feeding them now she will become more maternal towards them.

Is it her first litter?
If so she is learning as she goes along and will get the hang of cleaning them up. Saying that, some mums are more diligent than others and she maybe she's a bit slap dash, but I'm sure things will become better for all of you.

Give her water and food in her bed with the pups. You might have to hold the water dish under her chin and she will probably drink. Sometimes Lactol is useful as mine love it when they have pups.
Raw red meat is great milk producer, raw braising steak is a favourite.

I don't know about the boils. Are they sleeping on vet bed? It is very good for puppies as it stays nice and dry and doesn't ruck up.
if the boils don't clear up I should visit your vet.

Good luck
Liz

thank you all so much for the advise,

she is drinking lactol
and eating the raw meat as well as her natures menu puppy food

this is her first litter

i weighed the pups on wednesday and they were 8 0z
yesterday they were still 8 0z ,hence me wanting to bottle feed as well

they dont feel plump in any way after she feeds them
and still get on starving

so i will wait until she finishes feeding and then i will top them up

i was expecting them to double their weight by now as today they are 1 week old

thanks again

If she doesn't have much milk at the moment the puppies need to build up the supply by feeding frequently.  If you can, get the bitch to lay  down and put all the puppies on the teats every hour to 1.5 hours. As long as the pups are stimulating the supply and she is drinking and eating enough it should build up over a 24 to 48 hour period.  A bit of a pain in the neck I know but in the long run it is better for the pups to be on mum and better for you not having to bottle feed. :)
