I seem to remember hearing from somewhere that you can use Clinistix for testing for canine ovulation.

Has anyone ever tried it?

Any idea of what colour they strip should change to?  May try it alongside blood testing to see if I can see a change - far easier to be able to do something at home.

Hi

i have been using the ovulation pads which work with ph and change from pink to purple when ovulating. I  also fin dthe saliva test extremely good. I bought a small inexpensive microscope and every day take some saliva and look at it under the microscope when ovulation is near the pattern changes from dots to ferning. This indicates that ovulation will follow in 3 days and then another 2 days after that for ova to become ripe.

I have never heard of them being used to test for progesterone, but if anyone knows that they have I would be only too happy to trial them alongside the Immulite blood tests to see what sort of results you can get

I strongly suspect that those pads being sold as canine ovulation pads are just clinistix.

If these and the saliva tests were reliable then I think canine re pro specialists would have written something about ti.

I heard that they were being used for ovulation testing a long while back but when talking to someone during the week who had taken her bitch to a well know stud dog owner, said that the sticks do work and she has used them in the past - as I have some at home I will use them but will also be using other more tried and tested methods.

Certainly will do - but I don't hold out much hope they'll work.  I have 2 girls in season - 1 who is on day 18 (still quite red and losing lots) and one on day 7 - have started to use on both to see if/when I see a difference - and nothing as yet.  Hoping to mate the one who came in later - but obviously using another testing method alongside this.

Hi 2 at the same time lol. I use the pads and saliva test  Pads can be unpredictible but i have used the saliva test on my friends advice an dit has never failed. My girl is in season just now so i have been testing since day 1 just to get a good picture. Over the past 3 days the slides under the microscope have started to change and take on a ferning pattern which indicates that ovulation is 3-4 days away. I have been testing my other girl an duse this as a control as she is not in season her saliva slides are just showing dots. Its amazing to watch the changes every day. The product is used widely in the states but not here.Last year i had an inhouse progesterone test done by my vet which said that she had ovulated. Took her to the stud 3 days in a row and was not interested. 4 days later i used the slides and they suggested that she was about to ovulate so back again and this time spot on. So i can only rave about them . Took my other girl to stud today and no problems 2o min tie and back on Tues.

For saliva tests, what do you use and how did you know what to do?  I looked into Matel, but apparently thats now gone out of business.

Hi

if you go onto midwoof.com and look under reproduction you will come accross the  fertile focus an dit will tell you how to do it. Its an american site so would take a while to come but if you just buy a small microscope fromArgos or similar then copy the instructions from the site and do it yourself. A lot of people find it fiddly to use especially if the bitch does not drool a lot. I find the if i put my finger under her tounge and then wipe it on the slide there is usually enough. You have to leave for a good 30 min plus for the water to evaporate so you can see the salts. When the pattern starts to fern then you are 4 days from ovulation an danother 2 days for ova to ripen. Its definately worth a try . Pm me if you need to know any more. Good luck
