I've smelt some bad smells before, really bad just by the nature of things that I have done and do now..

This though has to be the worst offender for me, worse than any pee, poo or rotting animal carcus or even person.

This made me sooo sick it was untrue..

My dog earlier ate an animal carcus, a rotting bird at that, caught it before I got to him and he doesn't give these things up and runs away with them.
He has just thrown it back up in our hallway, my god, the smell is horrendous.. I was gagging and starting to throw up at just the smell let alone then clearing it up..
Clearly from this the 'leave it' command is going to be even more strongly worked on...

God the things we go through for our beloved dogs :-)

lol i currently have the waft of eau de fox poo in my living room , why do we do it !
- By suejaw Date 15.10.10 19:27 UTC
He's just done it again after clearing up :-(....

How long does it take for food to digest through a dog? He also has a squiffy bum now..

He's had pro- kaolin and will now have chicken and rice for dinner to settle his stomach..

> waft of eau de fox poo

Had that the other week, 2 dogs and then they ran at me covered in it :-(.. Ketchup is now left in the bathroom.. lol

My last dog ate, or rather gulped down a whole dead rabbit, hardly any chewing straight down in went. Didn't stay down for long though, I opened the back door of the van once we arrived home from the walk, and I hadn't heard him on the journey home, but he must have chucked this present back up for me. There it was in the back of the van on the carpet, only on cleaning it up though does the smell hit home. I was rather glad it was up and not still in his tummy though. Rather out than in.

My Tibetan Terrier found a long dead hedgehog once.  I'd just that day bathed and groomed him - a major operation with the full coat, and was walking him on rough land.   He rolled before I could stop him :(  I was gagging at 10 feet away and had to walk him home - a good 3/4 hour.   Picking quills out of him all the way as I was terrified he'd get one embedded and get blood poisoning.  Washing him was a nightmare, there was that many quills still in his coat!  - and the reek... eeew!

I am sooo glad this site is not scratch and sniff :(
Why do they have to eat the most revolting things? Hope all is better soon.
I'm sure small meals will be tolerated soon, but I wonder if they will have learnt their lesson???
- By suejaw Date 15.10.10 21:09 UTC
I'm hoping its all done and dusted now after he puked for the 3rd time. He's had a little bland meal, fingers crossed.. Learnt a lesson, doubt it.. lol

If I could bottle the smell i'd not ever give it to my worst enemy(ok maybe I would with what they've put me through ;-))

My Tibetan Terrier found a long dead hedgehog once.

Ah but have he ever popped one. Jade takes great delight in finding dead hedgehogs and rolling on them, as well as dead fish, dead birds, the list is endless. The smelly dead ones I can usually cope with, but when she rolls on freshly dead hedgehogs, their body pops out of the skin and looks like a little rugby ball. Now that is gross...

As far as smells, last winter she took off on the beach and flung herself down on what looked like a bundle of rags. Within seconds the smell was just awful. Usually she is pretty good, leave meaning spit it out and out, meaning move on and stop rolling in something grotty. This time no amount of shouting stopped her and I had to go right to her, only to find in was a dead sheep absolutely crawling in maggots. She was covered in a grey slime, with maggots galore crawling about on her. Words can't descrive that smell, and the worse part of it was we had travelled the 22 miles there in my friends van!! Even after swimming in the sea for ages she still had the grey gunge all over her and stunk to high heaven. That drive home was awful, and my poor friend had the pleasure of cleaning out her stinking dog mobile. I don't normally do marigolds, but there was no way my hands were touching that gunge. It took several baths, and days before both Jade and the house had stopped stinking.

Drinking from a stagnant pond is a killer once they throw it up YUCK!

Yuk,yuk,YUK!  :)
- By MsTemeraire Date 15.10.10 22:08 UTC
I sympathise...!!!!!
Not much can compete with a rotten cuttlefish washed up on the south coast - already rotting, then rolled in and finally eaten by a puppy. The 10m longline was not long enough; people crossed the street, then I had to bathe him when we got home.

And then the cuttlefish returned on my carpet....
- By Dukedog Date 15.10.10 22:11 UTC
It was dark in the woods one night, and my dog heard something in there, and went in to investigate, I then heard like a hissing type of sound, but didn't see what it was, but my dog came out and really stunk, as if something had spat or sprayed on him, like a badger or fox may be, would this of been possible?
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 15.10.10 22:59 UTC
Hmm yes this all brings back memories (not pleasant ones either). Sue, ask Deb about her previous dog - he had dire rear one night & it was putrid enough to set off her smoke alarm!
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 15.10.10 23:24 UTC
ROFLMAO I only hope it never happens in this house!!!!!
- By triona [gb] Date 15.10.10 23:35 UTC
My shoes are a good contender
- By Dukedog Date 15.10.10 23:58 UTC

I don't think your shoes count triona, unless your dog digested them and they came out of one orifice or another.LOL
- By suejaw Date 16.10.10 07:53 UTC

> it was putrid enough to set off her smoke alarm!

Flipping eck!!! PMSL... I know keeping a straight face when she tells me is unlikely.. But will ask when I see her in person, can't ask that over the phone.. ;-)

My ex defrosted green tripe in the microwave once - that was vile and resulted in the purchase of a new microwave as we couldn't get the smell out!
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 16.10.10 08:34 UTC
Bettyonthebus I symapthise, we thought we'd push defrost and had actually pushed micro :( Lots of retching here, it seemed to cling to the curtains. How people eat tripe I shall never know?
- By Norman [gb] Date 16.10.10 08:55 UTC
Yuk for each reply our companions are lovely creatures aren't they lol
- By Dukedog Date 16.10.10 08:57 UTC
Just the smell of any uncooked offal is awful, liver, hearts, kidneys all not nice, and when boiled for the dog smells even worse.
- By Dukedog Date 16.10.10 09:09 UTC
My old welsh school teacher had the breath of a skunks backside, but apart from this she was quite nice really.
- By mistral [gb] Date 16.10.10 10:20 UTC
Long dead seal is the worst smell ever both rolled on and scoffed down and thrown back up It is impossible to remove too as the blubber is so oily
- By sillysue Date 16.10.10 14:42 UTC
My ex defrosted green tripe in the microwave once

I once tried cooking tripe in the pressure cooker but it exploded and sent tripe all over the kitchen, walls, floor, ceiling the lot. The smell was there for weeks it seemed until I had to beg the OH to redecorate. The dogs loved the kitchen though and spent hours just sitting there loving it !!!
- By Annabella [gb] Date 16.10.10 15:40 UTC
My labs can sniff out any dead rotting animal for miles, the worst smell ever though must be dead fish, the oil and the scales of the fish takes me weeks to get rid of the smell off there coats.

I was going to say my cocker spaniel has some pretty disgusting farting, he can clear a room - but I think I prefer even that to some of these smells and mishaps!!
- By triona [gb] Date 16.10.10 20:15 UTC
LOL the dogs did eat a pair.
- By Dukedog Date 16.10.10 20:20 UTC
And my pup did eat one of my brand new evening shoes once (well he didn't digest any because, I had to pick the bits off the floor), I hadn't even had them on yet, but there you go, he saved me from wearing them anyway I don't do heels.

> My labs can sniff out any dead rotting animal for miles, the worst smell ever though must be dead fish

Oh agreed - rotting cuttlefish especially! Fox poo is a minor inconvenience in comparison.

My pup was about 4 months old at the time of year when they breed & then die (cuttelfish that is), getting washed up on the beach eventually. He managed to find one that had probably bred & died at least a fortnight before.... rolled on it thoroughly, ran off with it in high spirits and managed to swallow the thing before I could catch him. People were crossing the road on the way home to avoid us!

It is the most gag-wrenching smell ever... In hindsight I thought I'd probably over-reacted, until he found another one last year... people were covering their mouths & noses with their hands, and my eyes were watering! Luckily that time I had some antibacterial handwash gel so I rubbed that on him then made him swim in the sea for a few hours! LOL (no only joking, but it did take some time before he was approachable).
- By suejaw Date 16.10.10 21:02 UTC

> the time of year when they breed & then die (cuttelfish that is

We've seen very few on the beaches we go... What time of the year is the above so I can avoid it!! :-) I'm sure this is a very very stinky experience and I don't wish to have a go!!

Wonder whether being skunked is worse? by jove i'm glad we don't have these in the wild over here.

What's that welsh school teachers? :)

A few skunks have been found in the wild here, escaped pets (yes people do keep them as pets, I have met one & he was gorgeous!). Apparently it is now illegal to de-skunk them (remove glands) so the potential is there for them to colonise and breed in the wild, and use their famous mode of defence when under threat.

I have smelled skunk from a distance in the USA and my companion told me it was probably several hundred yards away - no, I would not wish that on anyone. Except maybe my worst enemy. On a bad day. With PMS! ;)
- By Goldiemad [gb] Date 16.10.10 22:36 UTC
This thread is really making me feel much better. My friend's two goldens actively avoid smellies, whereas my usually angelic ladylike girlie, absolutely revels at getting as dirty and smelly and possible. Show on Sunday, Mucky on Monday is her Motto....
- By penfold [gb] Date 17.10.10 21:20 UTC
I've smelt skunk as road kill .....and that was bad bad bad!!!

Some of the stories on here are truly cringe worthy....and I am another one who quite wants to find out dead 'cuttlefish on beach' season to be able to avoid it!
- By MsTemeraire Date 17.10.10 21:36 UTC

> Some of the stories on here are truly cringe worthy....

I am happy there are no seals near me! Dead fermented regurged seal must rank in the Global Top Five.
Dead Cuttlefish season is late June early July and only on the South Coast..... Thankfully :)
- By Dukedog Date 17.10.10 21:42 UTC
Hey MsTemeraire

You seem to know far too much about these animal smells, what are you some kind of professor of dead animal odours? ;)
- By suejaw Date 17.10.10 21:47 UTC

> Dead Cuttlefish season is late June early July and only on the South Coast..... Thankfully

:eek:Thats where I live, Thankfully I tend not to go to the beach at this time of the year, normally hot and full of people...
- By MsTemeraire Date 17.10.10 21:48 UTC

haha... no just be a dog/other animal owner in a rural or seaside environment for long enough.... lol
- By Dukedog Date 17.10.10 21:51 UTC

I think I might have to move to this South Coast in June next year then.;)

Wot you really want to meet head on, these rotting cuttlefish? You are weirder than I thought, Sian ;)
- By Lacy Date 17.10.10 22:05 UTC

> late June early July and only on the South Coast.....

I'm sure your right, but in the here on I.O.W. I thought it was even earlier, late April, May. They seem to come into certain Bays in huge numbers. Priory is especialy bad. Take surgical gloves with me if I do go, to wrestle the remains from the dogs. The more something stinks, the less likely they are to give it up, I've known Lucas charge the length of the beach for one.

Why on earth would you think me weird.;) What gave you that impression, ey, ey. LOL

I must have been a BH in another life. LOL

Must be earlier then for you on the Island as my doglet was born in early March, and came to me early May... would not have been taking him out to a beach so soon!
- By suejaw Date 17.10.10 22:28 UTC

> here on I.O.W. I thought it was even earlier, late April, May

Ooh Lacy, You guys must be storing them up then before they head east later on in full force from what Mrs T has said..
I used to see them on the beach when I was a lot younger, but not noticed them as i've got older..
- By suejaw Date 17.10.10 22:29 UTC

I'm sure you'll fit right in down here ;-)

Wonder whether being skunked is worse?

For an approximation, try a combination of burning tyres and seriously rotten fish--that's what a skunk smells like and the smell carries a long way away. Where my mother lives skunks are depressingly common roadkill, and this blast of stink is their last act of revenge on an uncaring world. I must admit to liking skunks--they are very entertaining little souls and we have enjoyed watching skunk families turn up for tea in the garden at night--we just keep the dog in.

Enough of The worst smell ever......

My favourite smell is puppy breath :)
