It's the only wormer that's licenced for use in pregnancy; it's generally totally safe, but like everything else, occasionally an individual's genetic makeup means it' has a bad reaction.
> Should i worm her now or wait till the pups are born??
She should be on Panacur from day 40 of gestation until 2 days post whelping. The dose for a pregnant bitch is a quarter of a normal adult dose, and, given daily, ensures that pups are 98% worm free when born.
I have used it on my toy breed for years with no bad reactions,,, ever.
I've also wormed my litter with Panacur paste with no problems whatsoever. However, have since heard a horror story within my breed where apparantly a whole litter became so sick they all died after being wormed.
I guess in that case we'll never know if it was just coincidental, but it really worried me!!!
I worm my bitches before mating with Drontal and then when the pups are 2 weeks old I worm them and mum, then every 2 weeks after that until they leave with instructions for further worming.
I don't like to give medication when in whelp unless absolutely necessary.
I have never had a problem with worm burden in pups.
Me too Liz R. I have used Drontal for many years and never had wormy puppies or mums. I too have a dislike of giving any medication to mums-to-be unless absolutely necessary.
There will always be the odd dog that will react against worming, in the 60 odd years I have had dogs all have been wormed, many with Drontal and I have only had one who reacted against it but that one was seriously effected and had to be given Panacur to which he had no problem at all.
I do exactly the same as Liz R as well. I also MUCH prefer that Drontal is one dose every two weeks and none of all that messing about with 3 days in a row -what a nightmare for a big litter!
Is it OK to use panacur on the bitch for the post day 40 regime but then use drontal at 2 wks for mum and pups? I do find the whole panacur 3 day thing a bit of a fiddle...would much prefer just the one dose and have it done and dusted.
