Hi we had to take are puppies 2weeks old to vet as we though they got kennal cough, as just one puppie kept making sound like coughing! but it wasn't all time it seem around the same time day perhaps few times aday however coughing seem to be lasting longer! vet thinks that it could be soft palata? (we did lose 3 pups with cleft palate! ) gave the pup with cough injection (Penicillin) we have been advise to weigh & measure the pup! she is againin weight & growing, so it seems the penicillin injection is working as the pup seems to be coughing or could it be (swallowing??) alot less and it doesn't last anywere as long as it first did ! can  anyone help do you know of anyone else dog that has  had anything that sounds like this! i've looked it up  (Elongated soft palata) in Brachycepholic breeds which she does fall into. so i know the do's & don't? just need to know if it seem right that it's soft palata or if anyone know what the out come is as they get older ! or anything else please , ps the  2 other pups are doing fine as is the other pup.

Hi Eddieluck
brachycephalic breeds can and do suffer with elongated soft palates but proper diagnosis cannot be made without an anaesthetic.
At two weeks old it seems a bit hasty to diagnose ESP. Did the pups get hand reared? I ask because sometimes they can inhale milk too quick and end up with mild aspirational pneumonia which would improve with the antibiotics.
If it is ESP you will notice as the pups grow that they have noisier breathing, reduced exercise tolerance and alot of reverse sneezing particularly when they bolt their food.
Best of luck with them. I hope they do ok.

They can get very snuffly as they start to develop teeth.  My breed's nostrels become a little tight and they sound like they have a cold.  It does go away as teething finishes.  The biggest issue with this is when you take them for first jabs.  Vet insists you need AB's for an infection.  As long as clear mucus no worries.  it might be worth ruling out infection at this stage if you are concerned.

The soft pallete can get stuck, they will make a quick snorting sound and look distressed, either, open the mouth or hold the nostrels momenterily to release the pallete and give TLC for a few mins.  They might be a little for this affect them yet.
