- By sal Date 12.10.10 20:14 UTC
ours  130.......... 149 one of if not the highest all year!
- By Dukedog Date 12.10.10 20:35 UTC
What does dogs, entries mean?
- By triona [gb] Date 12.10.10 20:37 UTC
number of dogs is how many dogs there and entries mean number of classes so some dogs are entered in more than one class hence why the entries are higher than the number of dogs.
- By triona [gb] Date 12.10.10 20:39 UTC
Not classes I mean well... in my breed 81 dogs and 84 entries so 81 dogs at the show with say 3 entering 2 classes.

Ok so class as in best of breed and best bitch in breed?
- By triona [gb] Date 12.10.10 20:43 UTC
umm how to explain... puppy class = 2 entries i.e....  'bob the builder' and 'flower power'  Junior class= 1 entry....'bob the builder'

so 2 different dogs 'bob the builder' and 'flower power' making 3 entries as 'bob the builder' is in 2 classes
- By Dukedog Date 12.10.10 20:45 UTC
I see, would a dog be allowed in both puppy and junior then?
- By triona [gb] Date 12.10.10 20:47 UTC
If he was 12 months old he could enter both...... puppy is 6- 12 months and junior is 12- 18 months. Or maybe somebody entered in Limit and Open I dunno why they would but they might.
- By Dukedog Date 12.10.10 20:59 UTC
Thank you.
- By Nova Date 12.10.10 21:01 UTC
Err! no, don't think so a puppy is up to the time he is 1 year old and junior is from 6 months to 18 months so in theory you can enter both with a dog under 12 months.
- By Goldmali Date 12.10.10 21:01 UTC

No Junior is 6 to 18 months.

In my breed it used to be common to enter more than one class.  In the past ti was common in all breeds especially when there was prize money in classes.  This is especially true at Breed Club shows where more classes are laid on.

Fro example suppose you entered a 10 month old pup in Puppy Junior and Novice, and got 1st, in one 2nd in the other and even third in the last.  When you entered the show the first class cost the most and the next classes entered with same dog were nominal.

I don't know what percentage of the entry went into prize money, but it could mean if you had a good day you would get most of your fee back.

Nowadays, especially as in my breed when entries are low especially in the age classes someone may be happy to win 1st out of a small number, or fancy their chances against older/more experienced competition.

I would be more satisfied with 2nd in a class with more dogs than the 1st in a class of one or two.

Some people prefer to win one class and go into the unbeaten dogs challenge at the end, saying that if they then got second in the next class they entered they couldn't' go in the challenge for Best of Sex, but if they didn't win the other class it means the judge would not likely have considered them for the top award anyway.

In 2001 at our breed club show I entered my 17 month old Jozi in Junior, Special Yearling, Graduate, Post Graduate, and Special Beginners.  She won all five, so when we got called in with all unbeaten dogs instead of some 13 bitches to go against there were just five!  She won Best bitch and Reserve Best In show.

Another reason for entering more classes is the Junior Warrant.  Points are only allocated to first place in classes with three or more exhibits.

I have two Junior warrant winners,a nd have never got a point in Puppy and rarely in Junior, so when I realised I had a good chance with a good exhibit I entered first two then three classes, usually only getting points from the higher classes.

When I was trying with my first champion the rules wanted 10 points won by winning 10 classes at Open shows, we never had enough dogs at all at that level, and pups rarely go BOB, My Jozi had more than enough class wins, but not enough with three in the class at Opens.  There are far fewer JW winners in my breed than champions.

Really low entry in my breed.  May take Calida even though I've clipped her off and she's bald LOL!

Why not, worth a shot, alternatively do they have a hairless dog class ? :)
- By Dukedog Date 12.10.10 22:16 UTC
If I was showing a dog I'd show 1 of these A.V. Imported Register Toy good chance of winning. :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 12.10.10 22:26 UTC
Yeah but there's no fun in wining if you haven't got competition, sooner be a small fish in big pond than a big fish in a puddle (mind the way things are going the latter will be true of me).

LOL

I'd do anything for a rossette.
- By Goldmali Date 12.10.10 23:34 UTC

Oh good, will you clean my house?
- By Dukedog Date 13.10.10 06:21 UTC
Teehee, very funny. I'll take that one in jest.

As long as you're there MarianneB,  I'd do anything in your house you asked me to. LOL
- By Nova Date 13.10.10 06:31 UTC

Silly when you think about it but at a championship show you usually only get a rosette if you win BOB and that is often a very poor example it is what it represents that is important. Now at a companion show you can come 5th in a class and get a really nice rosette and a prize - strange world.
- By Dukedog Date 13.10.10 06:38 UTC
Then I would rather come 5th at a companion.

Oh and MarianneB, it would be like role reversal, because I have a swede that cleans my pad.

We have a terrible entry, it's usually a really popular show but I'm not surprised it's a rubbish entry!
- By Dukedog Date 14.10.10 17:50 UTC

Why do you think it's a rubbish entry this year molezak, do you think the shows are suffering this year for some reason? Or is your breed not that popular this year for some reason?
- By Nova Date 14.10.10 18:33 UTC

Could be the breed has an unpopular judge or may be one of the top breeders so lots of exhibitors feel they can't enter because their exhibit has the judges lines in their pedigree.
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 14.10.10 18:35 UTC
yes we have a good entry too.  I'm going for the first time in years!  Well that's if my passes arrive :-O

That's good, good luck.

My Mid Counties passes arrived today, also very pleased to see us in at 1200 which is great as we are on the caravan site, so hopefully a small drink with dinner the night before is ok!!

Make it a bigg'n
- By Brainless [gb] Date 15.10.10 01:11 UTC
Well we are in at 9am, adn with only 30 odd dogs it will probably only take until about 10.30 before we are done.

Certainly in my breed with quite a few shows havign uys ona  weekday entries ar down buy about 25 - 30% for 2 or 3 years ago.

Certainly in my breed with quite a few shows having us on a  weekday entries are down by about 25 - 30% from 2 or 3 years ago.

I have done only half the shows I did last year and probably only 60% of those of the year before.

One of my friends who has been in the breed for ever is very into history/facts and figures. She has been comparing our entries. some of them have had the worst entry for nearly 20 years and when you consider that we are not a huge breed but have grown it is interesting.

We all have to make choices where we spend our money and I look carefully at what the judge did in the past ( type wise) and then whether I like the venue, some societies do try to go the extra mile and some just take exhibitors for granted. I always try to support the first time judge.
Enjoy Midland Counties all.
