Topic Dog Boards / Health / Spay hernia?
- By Fleabag Date 12.10.10 20:41 UTC
Had my girl spayed 2 weeks ago.  She's not one for taking life at a slower pace and I admit to struggling with keeping her as calm as she probably should have been.

I think it is entirely my own fault but noticed last night what looks like a small hernia at her umbilical end of the cut - which incidentally has healed beautifully.

No redness, weeping or anything nasty - just a small bulge about 1cm long and still soft.
Has anyone else had experience of this and any advice?

I have found some info online and general concensus seems to be that it should disappear in time but to try and continue to restrict exercise until it does.

I'd really appreciate some guidance - not keen on the idea of taking her back for another op and would such a small hernia have a significant impact anyway?

Thanks for reading.

Not quite the same perhaps but one of my cats developed a hernia after a c-section. She was definitely kept quiet and the vet admitted it was his fault. It's never disappeared and is about 2 inches big. This happened about 13 years ago now and the cat is 17 ½!

It may just be a local reaction to the internal stitches.  I wouldn't worry about it either as long as its clean etc. It may well go down as she heals more.

Had a bitch earlier in the year, who needed a section.  It was out of hours, so I couldn't choose the vet, but wasn't particularly enamoured of the one that operated.

I have never had such a huge incision on such a tiny breed.  Two weeks after surgery, there was a bulge at the end of the scar.  I booked an appointment with the head vet.  While he said that it wasn't their fault - he did repair it free of charge!  Read into that what you will.

I had it done after pups were weaned, and felt happier that it had been sorted.  I understand about not wanting to put them through further surgery, but I don't regret my decision.  She went for her booster last week, and he checked her underneath, all is smooth and looking good.  But then, I am not the sort of person to wait and see if things fix themselves.  We all make our own choices.  :-)

I had a cat spayed some years ago via midline incision (normally it is the flank) and was disturbed to see a lot of bulgy swelling around the wound shortly after. I was told by the vet it was an accumulation of fluid and would pass.... and it did. Could that be what you are seeing? Obviously if you in any way concerned or worried it won't hurt for the vet or a nurse to have a wee look.

My little dog was spayed earlier this year and she had quite a large lump/ hernia at the end of the scar where her belly button was. The vet said to leave it and see as it should go away. 6 months later and you would never had known it was there, the scar had healed and the lump gone and smooth.

Today I asked my vet about what sounds to be exactly the same size lump from an op done roughly same time scale.  I had the same response as sillysue and unless it shows any discolouration or weeps, not to worry about it, unlikely that it would be an hernia!
