Topic Dog Boards / General / Saving coat during playing?

Having a few issues saving coat on my lad during games with my youngster. He is a tricky thing to keep coat on at the best of times as he is prone to monster moults without warning. We're finally winning the battle, but having some ripped out during playing isn't helping! (its not chunks ripped out, don't get me wrong! just some of the length in places)

It only happens when they're running offlead when the youngster's herding instinct kicks in and this is expressed by hanging off his ruff. I don't tolerate it, but when they're bombing across a field I can't always stop them immediately. I'm loathe to stop them playing as they both enjoy it, but I'd prefer not to sacrifise his coat for their fun.

Any ideas what I can do to either stop the youngester doing it every time, or things I can use to protect the ruff? I was considering a snood sort of affair?

Mine play really rough and pull at ruffs and ears, not to mention legs, but never had an issue with their coats.

Wish I knew the answer, my youngest starts licking my older Flatties ears and before long he starts nibbling his ruff. Looks like he has had a bad haircut at the barbers!! Cannot always be there to stop it happening. I have tried using the sprays you can get to stop chewing but it didn't work with him, not too sure it would be good for the coat anyway.

Hope you get it sorted, I know how annoying it can be.

Had a similar problem with my 5 year old when she was a puppy, she literally stripped the top coat off my boy's ear feathering, left it all pale and fluffy! Tried all sorts of stuff but nothing worked except to distract her and redirect her energy which of course we couldn't do 24/7! Good luck!

I'm going to try a snood this week and see how that goes! I hadn't considered bitter spray but I won't bother from the previous review!

Its lovely to see them play so I hope the solution isn't no playing! (TBH if thats my only option, then he'll retire from the ring:)

Quite right too - we did lose a few places where the critique commented 'pity about the pale fluffy ears' and so on, but so be it, if that's the price for them being friends.

Thought 'cardboard' ears was one of the rewards for having more than one dog, never noticed it causing a problem with the coat though so it must be a breed problem.

The breed Brainless and I have do loose coat but not through play, well it does not show, although you do notice pups in particular with a gob fall of hair and the birds round here would not be happy with anything else to line there nest with, they do however manage to have enough left to be able to strut their stuff in the show ring without being penalised for moth-eaten coats.

when mine are at home ( I dont run the pup and big boy together) my eldest wears a large t-shirt it doesnt solve all the probs but stops the pup stripping his coat  completley  and everytime I see the pup charging for him its the old AH AH hes slowly learning having entire males I have to let them have someplay but it is difficult can understand what you mean, but the t-shirt has deff worked, he does look abit silly but no-one sees him LOL  , only other treatment would be seperation guarenteed  hope you get a solution xxx
