Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / 3 and a half week old pup not liking solids - any advice pls
- By Zebedee [gb] Date 11.10.10 10:21 UTC
Hi,
I have a litter of six, 3 and a half week old pups who have been on solids since last Wednesday. They have Weetabix and cottage cheese in the morning with a tiny sprinkling of Welpie and later in the evening minced meat and soaked complete puppy biscuits. They are all taking to it pretty well with the exception of one pup who would rather feed from mum. He just does not show any interest in food at all. He will sometimes take the food from my finger but it is a bit of a struggle. When i give them solids i keep mum out of the way as they sometimes get distracted. They are weighed every day and are all gaining weight. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i can feed mr fussy?
Thank you for reading.

He might not like the weetabix or its binding puppy up.  Could you make it more sloppy or try mashed kibble in the Whelpi/goats milk to replace that meal to see if that helps.  Or even tinned puppy food mixed very sloppy.

Someone with more experience might be able to advise better should be along.  Is he ready for weaning?

when they were  first getting used to solids, I ground the kibble up until it was like coffee, mixed in some warm water and added some Wainwright puppy pouch to taste. That went down well. As they got older, I ground it less and less until they were eating it straight from the packet.
I wouldn't worry too much, theres always one who drives you mad when weaning starts but as they get older they will get to a stage when they are like crazy things to get to the food. As long as the weight is going on and the pup is active like the rest.

I would miss out the weetabix altogether, this has no nutritional value for them at all. like has been mentioned soaked puppy food (what you have been feeding mum on) made to a smooth consistency and maybe a meal of raw mince (making sure if it is beef that it has been frozen for 24 hours before using) this can even be mixed in with the kibble mix. Scrambled eggs would be be ok to feed them too, I would include the whole egg shells and all just crush it up finely. They will all take to it, some are more lazy than others, but they will all get there in the end.

My little monster wouldn't touch puppy food at any consistency, she went straight to little chunks of chicken or steak. Problem then was weaning her off steak onto kibble....

Why would any dog want to live on boring biscuits all their life when they've tasted steak?  I know that I wouldn't. :) :)

Oh yes, I had every sympathy - but as hubby won't consider feeding raw and I wouldn't know what to do anyway, kibble it is! She's fine most meals now, just a slightly miffed look as she reaches the bowl, then tucks in!

You've just reminded me why I live on my own - thanks. :) :)

Lol! But without his salary I couldn't fund my dog show habit. Also he's handy for looking after the one that doesn't go to shows. :-)

Wise girl! :) :) x

I agree that Weetabix has no place in a puppies diet.  I think it has just been passed on from days gone by when we didn't have such a wide range of well balanced nutrition available.

I would be soaking puppy kibble.  My last litter had the Fish4Dogs salmon mousse mixed in, and it didn't touch the sides.

Thank you everyone for your advice. Tonight i gave them mince, the same concoction as mum is having with puppy biscuits soaked and with scrambled eggs. It went down a storm! Even mr fussy didn't know when to stop. Thank you all very much.xx

In my case a driver is handy after years of relying on lifts from long suffering fellow exhibitors.  Also he loves the whelping part, almost fights me to get in there helping cut cords etc.

No more weetabix that's for sure! They've got fish for brekkie tomorrow. They haven't tried that yet!

Glad they're eating.  How have you got in this morning with them.

My puppy loved fish the first couple of times and then went off that too.... my old boy otoh adored fish as a treat - I used to make him tuna cake for shows instead of liver cake.

I am using fish4dogs on my next litter having previously used proplan. I will also be using the salmon mousse as an addition as the adults love it as a treat...I'm sure it will go down well with the pups fingers crossed, although my breed do tend to eat pretty much anything presented to them ;-)

My pups are about a week old than yours and I'm using puppy kibble, with warmed up goats milk in it.

Emz - I bought some in at Cruft's, and slowly mixed in with the complete that I was already using.  I bought the tiny kibble for the toys, and the normal one for the Collies.  I am now seeing a new shine to the coats, due to Omega 3 I guess.  I am sure that you won't be disappointed.

well my adults have been on a while and the dry scurfy skin often seen in our breed has dissappeared altogether coats are shiny better on the exit end too! so looking forward to seeing how the litter will turn out. Plus being on the breeder program seems to be quite a good deal also.
