Just thought I'd share this with you - it has always been the standard joke in our household that I've had complete control over the dogs since their time with us began. I've done all their obedience training and the feeding etc etc. My other half is so soft with both our dogs that he bonded more towards our soft hearted little hound and the dobe came to me for everything as 'alpha female' and the Beagle cringes in the corner if I so much as raise my voice.
Whilst taking the dobe to the vets on Monday, Hugo was so distressed at being back there that he a) peed up against the waiting room wall whilst I was booking him in then
b) went for another dog that came in behind us who growled at Hugo (which always sets him off). During the struggle, Hugo broke his harness and all was chaos. On the next chair to us was a little cat in a basket yolwing it's head off which Hugo tried to lunge at and eat at every opportunity. On his way out Hugo then went for every little dog waiting patiently for his turn. This resulted in me having to pick up the great lump and carry him out!!
So when the other half took Hugo in this morning, all doped up on antibiotics and still half alseep, he returned with a huge grin and promptly told me that the vet had said to him "Thank God you've bought him in this time. Hugo obviously knows who's boss, that other girl couldn't control him at all and she was in a right state!"
I'm changing vets immediately! The cheek!

Sorry, I had to laugh at that! I bet your other half had great pleasure in telling you!
I take Amber (our lab pup) training, but she takes more notice of my husband than me. Probably cos she's at home with him all day though. Well, that's my opinion anyway!!

Ok, I hate to be the party pooper here, but I fail to see anything remotely funny about a dobermann lunging at a cat & going for other dogs......this is the sort of thing that gets the breed (undeservedly so) a bad name, and I doubt if any of the other people in the waiting room found it funny either. :(

Oh, relax. It's important to keep a sense of humor when owning a dog.

It could be that he wasn't feeling too good, that is often why dogs go to the vet.

dont think im convinced the COCK THIER LEG through fear, PIDDLE ON THE FLOOR IS MORE LIKE A FEAR REACTION!!
im afraid i have to agree with sam , i dont find it funny either :( .its hardly surprising the vet thought the dog was out of control! it WAS! . as for crazydogs suggesting you should lighten up....that is a cheek. i have a perfectly good sense of humour, but a dog fighting in the vet, and attacking a cat in a basket is definately not funny. if someone gets hurt in the fracas the dog pays the price.....

Ok you lot, calm down! If another dog growls at Hugo he immediately growls back and lunges at them then comes and hides behind me, he doesn't want to fight, he's far too soft! My orignal post does say that the other dog growled first, it was him going for Hugo - not the other way around! Secondly, he wasn't actually trying to eat the cat, that was just my expression. He was just desperate to have a good old look and a sniff but he's so clutzy that if I'd let him do it, he would probably have knocked the entire basket off it's chair!
Anyone who knows dobes will be aware of how they lunge and spin about like loons - it's this that was causing the chaos because his harness had broken and I could get any grip on him - other than picking him up! He was just thoroughly nervous and over excited...
I was just trying to lighten things up, the vet loves our dogs and always insists on a cuddle with them before she treats them and I've never known Hugo so naughty in the vets before, he usually lies on his back and lets everyone tickle his tummy! Sometimes it's nice to share the nightmares and know there are others out there going through the same thing from time to time...

i think all animals are out of character at the vets,i took the story for what it was~a vet story....not a "bad example of the breed" !!!!

lol at that
Some people take life to serious, I am sure we have all had bad, good or funny experiences at the vets, Ours included two Newf and a Rabbit. (don't worry the rabbit didn't get hurt, but Hudson & Emma nearly did).
I do think people should try and relaxs abit and stop having ago at the people who try and bring some fun back into the forum.
When deciding to join CD, it was people like Jackie H and John, LynnT,DOGS etc experienced advice and Melody's whit and ZoeBeveridges puppy etc, that made me want to join in. But the site seems to have turned into a war of words.
I am sorry if my comments annoy some people as I haven't been using the board long and I do not mean to upset anyone, but there are far to many heated theads at the moment and if this site has any chance of making into the New year, people need to put their problems behind them and go back to what this board is all about. HELPING EACH OTHER.
Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year
Jessica

Hi ladyg
I found it amusing and glad it’s not only me that is totally shown up at times by my dobs
The dobermanns do have a height energy level and are very excitable at times hence max is now on a holty instead of choke chain as every time he sees another dog he spins round in circles crying and then rears like a horse his 4 yrs old but thinks all dogs are there to play with him hence holty instead of choke chain as I have more control when he gets excited so I can really relate to your post,
Sandy.
alright alright alright alright...i apologise most sincerely. sob sob sob sob im so terribly sorry i offended anyone. i was just expressing an opinion and i get all this! i know that i am a total;ly worthless person who doesnt deserve to be on this board obviously so im off. for good .

AAWWW Don't go Pink!

Ah now Piks, variety (of opinion) is the spice of life! Otherwise would make for very little traffic, also very boring, board!
I was always told if someone is giving you a hard time at least another bu**er gets a respite. :D :)-
