Hi,

I wormed my 16 week old HV pup with Panacur 10% liquid last night - first part of a 3 day course. I then gave her dinner etc as per normal. However about 3 hours after worming she started vomitting. She basically threw up everything until there was nothing but bile left. I was so worried about her that I was on the verge of calling the vet. I checked on her in the middle of the night and she was fine and is a lot happier this morning with nothing else coming up.

I now have the dilemma of what to do next? Do I worm her again with the same Panacur or shall I try a different brand?

I don't think the Panacur was in her system long enough to have had an effect as a wormer .

The vet has advised leaving it a couple of days and then trying her on something else? Is this what anyone else thinks?

Was there worms in what she threw up?

No worms visible, I did had a good look through to the disgust of the OH. There was some material of one of her toys which has now been got rid of. 

May be a coincidence - particularly as there was material (this often causes my dogs to throw up)

I would leave it 48 hours and, if all well, I would try the Panacur again. If it happened a second time then that's too much of a coincidence for me.

In saying that, I do know that Panacur has its critics who have said it made their dog very ill. I've never had an issue with it and it's the one wormer I do trust.

I know people who have had puppies die from Panacur so I won't use it myself, I always use Drontal puppy. But I also know of people who have had problems with Drontal. Some animals just cannot tolerate one thing. What I dislike with Panacur above all is the need to use it for 3 days in a row.

Do you think it would be safe to administer a Drontal tablet say on Monday so 3 whole days since the vomitting?
I was going to get tablets this time but as I still had some Panacur liquid left I thought I would just use it one more time - hindsight is such a wonderful thing.
I am also not keen on giving it 3 days in a row but it was recommended by vet etc for young pups so I just carried on with the one I kept.

Tablets are so much easier!

I think safest bet is to phone the vet and ask, they should be able to advice over the phone.

Drontal for young puppies (up to 12 weeks) is also liquid, but it's just one dose once a fortnight.

You are giving a smaller dose over a three day period rather than one large dose and, in theory, should minimise the risk of ill effect. It's the only wormer I have been recommended as safe to use on my epileptic dog both by my vet and a large epilepsy charity. I guess if you ask enough people you will find some who have had issue with a particular medication and often that's based on coincidence rather than a real link.

I would use the Drontal and not the Panacur next time.  My bitch is allergic to Panacur following an overdose (following veterinary advice - they gave me an adult instead of puppy dose) as a young puppy.  She became severely dehydrated.  The next time she had it was shortly after delivering her first litter, and we nearly lost both her and her litter.  The reaction was much worse the second time, and she was very ill.  It wasn't a coincidence - she had become hypersensitised to the product by the first incident.

She has the reaction written on her notes at the vets, so they won't prescribe it to her.  The other dogs can't have it either, in case she should ingest their motions.

She takes Drontal ever since, and has never had a reaction to it.  Or any worms.

Edited to say: Both times the reaction started very quickly after administering the wormer - within an hour the first time.

Like colliecrew, Panacur gets the thumbs up for me.  Can I ask why you gave it on an empty stomach?  Only you say that you fed her right after.  I often poach fish in milk and squirt the Panacur into and stir. 

I never worm any pup on an empty stomach, and in all my years with Panacur I've never had a problem.  If she brought up most of it, it is not going to hurt starting another 3 day course in a few days.  Remember that, given over 3 days makes it a small dose in comparison to the one day wormers.

Panacur has been tested for safety at much stronger than the recommended dose with no ill effects.  I use it for breeds much smaller than yours quite safely.

It wasn't intentionally given on a empty stomach but I don't like to put it into any food as she is an incredibly fussy eater (see other post) so prefer to administer it straight to her, I then know she has had it and hopefully it won't put her off any other foods!
She is absolutely fine now and after speaking to the vet will leave it a couple more days then try again with a different wormer.
