Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / my dog is due to whelp ,but has diarrhea/little fresh blood
- By thrones [gb] Date 07.10.10 07:45 UTC
hello sorry to trouble you,
my medium sized dog is due to whelp any day
she is at day 59 now
she has had diarrhea on and off
yellow
but this morning she passed drops os yellow  diarrhea with fresh blood through it

her temerature was 36.7 yesterday morning
and 37.4 last night,
no digging
no shaking
slightly off her feed

id appreciate any advise

thank you very much

i didnt go into this light hearted,i have been reading anything i can get my hands into for two years before even mating her, with a dog that will compliment her and i have shown for years

i have read the bob a dozen times,
and im on page 72 of the breeding forum here
and have researched this breed inside and out

i used to show horses for 25 years, and worked in a show yard{dogs} for years, but this has me worried

id rather ask the question than risk my dogs health :0)

If you're concerned try a call to your vet.

Hi,

Has she always been prone to diarrhea or is it something new? If she is straining a lot to pass just small amounts she may be rupturing small blood vessels or it could be that the bowel is inflamed and bleeding. Really it would not hurt to have her checked by the vet just to be on the safe side.

Kind Regards

Hi Thrones welcome to the forum I do think the best option would be to call your vet and talk to them. The blood could be due to continued straining however the diarrhoea is obviously a concern.

In my experience diarrhoea is often a first sign of labour being about to start, and a bit of blood can be due to the straining. I'd keep a very close eye on her now. Personally I have never seen a temperature drop or found taking the temperature useful.

would agree totally with marianne, a sign things are starting, but just keep a close eye on the blood situation.
let us know how she goes

Good luck

he said as she is usually prone to diarhea anyway, it is more than likey she is straining with the size of her she feels theres more to pass ,so to speak

she has been ince ,with no blood, and shes very sleepy

so ill keep  good eye o her

thank you all very much

Glad to hear the vet thinks everything's ok.  Good luck with your puppies!

Glad that you have had reassurance from your vet.  But most every bitch I have ever whelped, has had awful squits towards the end.  Once it starts I expect labour to kick off within 24 hours usually.  It's perfectly normal for them to clear themselves out prior to the birth.

And taking temperature has never been an indicator at all for me personally.

Hello Thrones. Welcome to Champdogs Forum.

How is your girly today? Any news?
- By thrones [gb] Date 11.10.10 12:17 UTC
well her temperature went down to 36.7 and stayed there, day 62
i wasnt going to use her temperature for anything but a guide
i just had a feeling she would go into labour on saturday night

she didnt shiver

didnt go off her food
but scraped the papers in the whelping box
and had her bed on top of her head which i thought was very funny she looked like a tortoise

i had a nursery fireguard up against a radiator at a low heat setting should she need it,
which i draped in a large duvet cover
and i attached a baby monitor with a small camera inside it so i wouldn't disturb her

well 12.00 midnight she started contracting
and it wasnt until 3.00 am the first signs of the bubble came, followed by a very large pup feet first
she actually got her head stuck so i tried to slide the pup out with her on her contractions but to be honest i was afraid of pulling its legs off ,

but after a short time i gently eased her out between the bitches hind legs

the pup was large and grey around her tongue

i broke open the sack ,and used a bulb to take any excess fluid from her mouth and nose
with no avail
so i swung her between my legs and rubbed her and brought her round

this was my bitches first litter and she is large toy and cant chew the cords
so i did all that ,i pushed the blood from the placenta into the pup before detaching

my bitch licked the pup and i tried to attach the pup but the pup didnt want to suckle

my girl was very good cleaning ect

then the next pup came far more easily
a boy this time and smaller

my bitch did all the work herself
and i got the boy onn her asap

this pup came at 3.00am

she contracted for two and half hours with nothing still full of pups, and i rang the vets,

we got to the vets and he gave her oxytocin {sp}
and she delivered two more pups
first pup still hadnt fed at this stage. didnt want to , so i asked the vet for  a bottle just to get her going.and i noticed the pup always moved away from the litter and mum wasn't very interested
tummy a bit grey as was tongue

pup would take bottle

anyway

the vet thought she had finished
i thought i could feel one possibly two more pups, but her thought is where the ribs
so we took an xray
and there were two more pups this was at twelve midday sunday

he sent me home after giving another oxytocin shot
we arrived home and she started contracting she had one pup but couldnt deliver the next but was exhausted and nothing was happening , so i gave her the other injection at 3.00 and she had the final pup sadly as the other wee girl pup died among her sisters and brothers ,i tried everything to save her ,including oxygen

the mother dog kept cleaning them frantically and wouldnt feed them unless we held her
the she just walked off and left them,
she has now neglected them completely and i and bottle feeding every two hours with lactol

any advise would be brilliant thanks

i have them on a heat pad and they look very contented
3 girls ,and two boys, and the little one that died

im find it very hard to getting the bottles working, i have to make my own hole in the teat and im using a sterilised needle but the milk isnt flowing the way id like , i make a hole too big and it stared to come out their noses
or its to small where they are getting nothing

so im using at the minute a small syringe

It's not unusual for first-time mums, especially those who've had a traumatic labour, to be confused by their puppies, and not want much to do with them. The best thing you can do is hold her still while they feed. This will get the vital colostrum into them, and will also release hormones in the mother which will help bring out more normal maternal behaviour. It sounds as though you've got a very busy time ahead of you!

Wow, you really went through the mill! Luckily my girl was a super mum both times, I do hope your girl recovers from the traumatic birth and accepts them soon.

like Jg siad try holding mum in the whelping box giving her lots of cuddles and telling her how good she is ,pups do need the 1st few days of milk and she might just start feeding them herself..i had 1 girl that was overwhelmd when she had her 1st litter and i had to stay with her for 4days ,i meen sit and sleep by the side of the box so mum wouldnt be able to hurt or walk away from them i kept telling she was a good girl and loving her feeding her lots of great food she soon learnt to stay with pups and became a fantasic mum but was hard work for 4 days but better to try this than having to feed pups yourself for 3/4 weeks ...let us know how she gets on x

Just to echo what the others have said. Tuppence did not want to know her puppies at all fo 48 hours- she seemed terrified of them. I sat up with her holding her down and making her feed them then from no where came a lick then another and voila she realised how it all worked. I have never seen a bitch enjoy puppies the way she did constantly putting toys in their mouths and just so happy. Give it time and stick with it even if you are topping them up ty to make her feeed them. Good luck
