Hi

Our pups are 6 1/2 weeks old and no matter how many times I mop the floors there is now a urine smell when you enter the back of our house. They are kept on a tile floor and have a potty tray which they do use - however obviously not all of the time as I seem to be losing the battle of the odour control!!

So far I've used  up a bottle of Trygene (sp?), and am mopping separate areas (when pups aren't on them!) with bleached water. I also have cleaner with Febrese which keeps the smell away better than the bleach tbh.

I know there are disinfectants which are harmful, could someone please recommend a brand/name which would be suitable and which I could pick up from either Pets At Home, Tesco or Asda.

I could of course purchase something online, but am loathed to pay the P&P charges - also it would probably take it's sweet time to get to me.

The pups are spending periods of time outside every day and are just grand so no problems with them at all - it's just the smell which I can't seem to shake no matter how many times I "clean".

Any advice or tips gratefully received!

I use Zoflora diluted - seems to work...

> Zoflora

This can be purchased normally in suprtmarkets, I've had it from Tesco and Sainsbury's before

Just be careful with the bleach -even if the floor is dry and the pups just come in with damp feet. A friend had to take an entire litter of 12 to the vet with burns on their paws after using bleach.

Also do use a detergent first to remove all protein and then rinse with the disinfectant.
- By roscoebabe [gb] Date 05.10.10 17:25 UTC
I use zoflora both indoors and out and Odourkill by The Animal Health Company which is absolutely brill and is safe to use with puppies.

I use Johnsons Clean'n'Safe.
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 05.10.10 20:29 UTC
I've been using Zoflora but wish it was sold in 5 litre containers.
- By agilabs Date 05.10.10 20:32 UTC
bicarb is a good odour controller, if you use that in a solution it may work and would be harmless for the pups feet. you'd need it in largish quantities, probably available in the supermarket if you ask as it has a lot of popular non-culinary uses.

I won't ever use bleach where dogs have been.  Might seem a daft idea, but I found the smell causing problem was the mop head.  Even making up a new bucket of Mistral, I found that it was my mop that stank.  I regularly throw it in the bin and buy a new one.

If hard pushed, put mop head in a large lingerie bag, throw in washing machine and only use biological wshing powder.

Jobs a good 'un!

I used diluted Milton whenever I had puppies in the house.

Thanks all for your replies.

I popped out to Asda last night and spent ages checking the labels on the stuff in Asda lol! I'm glad some of you suggested Zoflora because that was the only one which said safe to use around pets as long as the area is dry.

So... Armagedon faced me at 6.30 this morning... 7 very awake and raring to go puppies a couple of whom had already decided to poo and wee and the rest then trod it into the floor... ahhh deep breath, quick 10 minute run around outside (more like sprint about and bounce off the sides of the pen which is home made and about 25' x 15'), breakfast then further 20 minutes sprinting about the kitchen/dining room. Shut them in the kitchen, sweep and mop floor with the Zoflora, play with puppies. When dry, let puppies in, another 20 minutes running/sprinting about, occasional scuffles, one has decided she can tip over the heavy water bowl all over the newly mopped floor, play in potty box which is extra fun when mum has just put clean stuff in there :). Laugh at puppies who are sprinting after the one who's picked up the toy and is charging about with everyone chasing her...

So the pups eventually go to sleep where they're supposed to be, cardboard chips all over the floor from the potty box (works well - a growbag tray with cardboard chip horse bedding in), a wet towel which has mopped up the spilt water from bowl, sweep and mop kitchen floor with Zoflora, boil kettle, make cuppa, collapse in a heap...LOL!!!!!

So - almost 3 hours solid since 6.30am - who said raising puppies was easy money???? I am going to need a spell in a health farm recuperating after this little lot go to their new homes in about 10 days..

Only problem is the bowl tipper is the pup most likely to be staying here... little madam!!!

And yes - it's a little early to tell (I'm now in the lounge and the kitchen floor is still drying) but it already smells better in there... hopefully successful.

I usually start praying for just one puppy owner to come and take their baby home....Pleeaase!!!

Lol I have already decided the pups who can go first!! We've got a couple staying on a few more days than the rest but they're the mellower ones so will be much easier (I hope)!

Just had a friend over (helped me with whelping and previously a A1 judge for another breed) who has looked at the girls and said she'll be cross with me if I keep anything other than the bowl tipper...lol!!!! Good thing is everyone seems to be agreeing on the same puppy - and she was the one who caught my eye as soon as they were born... do you think it's meant to be??

First pup is going in 9 days time... the countdown has begun!!
- By rocknrose [gb] Date 06.10.10 12:30 UTC
The people who make Trigene (Medichem) also do one called Odogene, its cherry scented and it really does the job of getting rid of smells. I use it in my kennels.
- By itsadogslife [gb] Date 06.10.10 12:38 UTC
Thanks, I'll check it out - nothing like the heady aroma of dog urine in the house to prompt a search for odour solutions...lol!
- By Jocelyn [gb] Date 06.10.10 12:51 UTC
Biological washing powder is good. becareful it can leave the floor slipery.

Yep I would think so. You would be so cross if you did not keep her and she turned into a real stunner. And she may grow out of tipping the bowl over lol.

Well this little girl is "Orange Girl" and funnily enough it was Orange girl from the last litter who was the pick too... spooky!!

I have a video clip of one of the girls from our last litter doing exactly the same thing... perhaps it's them telling me they're going to be water babies... probably!!!

- By briedog [gb] Date 07.10.10 07:11 UTC
120ml sorry not 500ml

I used to use Dettol to disinfect( you can get large containers at Countrywide ) and then use Odourkill for smells in the outside run area and that was very good at keeping the smells at bay.
- By Pedlee Date 07.10.10 08:03 UTC
Can't remember who it was that told me, but I was under the impression that anything that goes milky white when it has water added to it (such as dettol, zoflora etc) is not safe for use where animals are.
- By roscoebabe [gb] Date 07.10.10 08:28 UTC
It's safe to use with dogs but any disinfectant that turns white is not safe to use with cats

Kind Regards
- By itsadogslife [gb] Date 07.10.10 10:11 UTC
It says on the Zoflora packaging that it is safe for animal housing, as long as the surface is dry before reintroducing them.

I can report that 2 days of using the Zoflora the whole area is smelling so much better, so can recommend it!

Will look out for it in the Pound shop, that's a good buy!
- By Vanhalla [gb] Date 07.10.10 13:37 UTC
Really wouldn't want to use Febreze - some dogs are allergic to it.  I have a friend who told me their dog was.  I used the Animal health Company Parvovirucide (which was so strong, it killed the worms in my back garden), but I have previously used Zoflora too.
- By jacksgirl [gb] Date 07.10.10 19:38 UTC
I use Cromessol ADD Blend B.  The only product that I have found that really does kill the pee smell.  Available at most all breed Championship Shows.  I have also use Odorkill but find that it goes 'off' in the bucket almost immediately it has been used.
- By MsTemeraire Date 07.10.10 19:53 UTC
Zoflora here too, it's just cheap, easy to find and smells really nice. I would love to try some of the Mistral but the P&P puts me off and i don't need industrial quantities with just one dog and a small patio to de-smell.
- By ali-t [gb] Date 07.10.10 20:31 UTC

> I would love to try some of the Mistral but the P&P puts me off and i don't need industrial quantities with just one dog and a small patio to de-smell.

I use mistral everywhere so it works out really economical.  I put it in the washing machine with the dogs bedding, spray the worktops in the kitchen, spray shoes with it as an odor neutraliser etc etc
- By Lacy Date 07.10.10 21:20 UTC
Used to use flash, but have been using Zoflora after a previous topic some months ago. Wouldn't use anything else now, smells good not overpowering and keeps the floors just as clean.
- By Crespin Date 12.10.10 00:04 UTC
If you can get it in the UK, I would highly reccommend Urine Off Dog and Puppy Formula Odor and Stain Remover.  I put this on puppy (and some dog accidents LOL) and you would never know they ever had a mess there!  I use it on both carpet and tile floors.  It works really well, so if you can get it in the UK it is totally worth the money!

Odourfresh is brilliant

I have Mistral which is great for the place smelling nice, but it doesn't clean. I decided yesterday to do a clean up of floors, walls and paintwork and use bio liquid, wow!!! Not only does it smell good it also cleaned a lot better than say normal floor cleaner.
- By WendyJ [gb] Date 18.10.10 01:59 UTC
Ooh that's an awesome price for the Odourfresh and it's got some awesome scents (looking at Cinnamon, Bubblegum and Spearmint yum).  Can it be used directly on carpets or clothing (ie spraying the bottom of trouser legs for people coming to visit pups)?  The ad says it can be used on paw pads - does anyone use it to 'disinfect' their other dogs when coming back from a walk when you've got pups?  (I'm not as obsessive as I sound - but I ask the questions anyway LOL)
- By mountaindreams [gb] Date 18.10.10 06:49 UTC
Clothing is fine if I go out and I have pups at home I spray myself in it when I get back. Doesn't make your hair sticky or anything. I spray the dogs in it too. U can use it on your washing on a cycle, their bedding comes out fresh then. I also spray pups with it if needed, my last litter were at vets at 4 weeks and got a light dusting on returning home.
Can be used on anything. We have just had kennel cough here and because I have an older dog with lung problems was worried sick she would get it from a food bowl or something. All my bowls have been washed this month and then I change water and add odourfresh and dip them all. She never got the kennel cough.
When u have puppy buyers coming clean up and then in the room they are going in spray down the curtains, on sofa, carpet and the room smells wonderful when they come in...alot of people comment and want to buy it.
Good in cars too, infact anywhere and very safe.

Anyone with kennels the pineapple and bubblegum smell stays for a long time. We have just tried the baby powder and it is horrible but I love the bubblegum.

Normally here in 2 days too.

Thanks so much for the info.  I struggled to find something I was comfortable with last time and had completely forgotten what a great resource Champdogs is. This time I'm researching early.  I may just have to grab up that special offer as it sounds like it'll be good for all sorts - not just when the pups are about.

Thank you :)
- By suejaw Date 18.10.10 07:49 UTC
Doh, Mistral and Odourfresh are the same.. lol.. I purchased mine on ebay from this seller and it worked out well.
I've got a spray which I fill up with spearmint and water and dancer around the house with it, smell does last for a while too..
- By mountaindreams [gb] Date 18.10.10 09:12 UTC
I also keep my empty bottles and mix some up for puppy owners to take with them for first few weeks too.
- By Blue Date 18.10.10 11:50 UTC
Being honest I think if puppies have access to a tiled floor the problem with never vanish.  Grout holds the smell forever.  Are they in a puppy pen or running free..

When I use a puppy pen I always buy a bit of cushion floor and put it underneath.

Everyone has different noses but I would always smell it if it got into the tiles.

Savlon antiseptic liquid - 3 capfulls in a mop bucket of hot water - does the trick!
- By Samie [gb] Date 20.11.10 00:01 UTC
i wont use most discentfectants when my puppies were around! I used vinegar! white vinegar, in a spray bottle, spray undiluted on the floor and let it soak for about 3 minutes then mop over with some steraliser and warm not hot water, your home will have a vinegar smell to it for a copule of hours! but it does get rid of it! bleach just aggravated it for some reason
- By Anndee [gb] Date 25.11.10 14:19 UTC
After reading such good reports on here about Odourfresh i have gone to the link and bought 4 x 5 litres.
I have never used it before so what are your opinions of the best scents to go for?
I have gone for the bubblegum, cinnamon (for Christmas ;o), cherry & spearmint.
Now go on and tell me I have picked the worse ones!!!
I'm looking forward to trying them out in the home and in my grooming salon.

Just received my latest order from mistral, babypowder bubblegum and spearmint. Love spearmint and just trying the others due to recommendations here. Just put baby powder in my washing to sse what it smells like and sprayed the house , however did manage to spry it in my mouth by mistake yuk I dont recommend that!!
- By Anndee [gb] Date 25.11.10 19:14 UTC
Oooh. I like that idea of using it in the washing. I can do my towels that I use in the salon in it and they'll smell gorgeous! Oh and the dogs bedding. And our bedding. The list is endless!!!!!!! :O0
Were you trying to use it as a mouth freshner ;o)
Does the baby powder one smell really like baby powder as someone on here didn't think it smelt too nice. If it does smell like BP then I wish I had bought that one. Maybe I'll get that one at a later date.
- By VTR [nz] Date 24.02.11 21:41 UTC
Hi there,
Have you tried using white vinger straight onto the area. Also got another idea try vanilla essence in the room which will take the smell away. It works on carpet when there has been an accident in our house. Also have you tried placing a big plastic tarp on the floor so it will be easier to clean and the smell will be removed when pups are out side more.

Good luck
- By MsTemeraire Date 24.02.11 21:50 UTC

> Also have you tried placing a big plastic tarp on the floor so it will be easier to clean and the smell will be removed when pups are out side more.

Some years ago I had  friend with a new puppy and she had a big blue plastic tarp on the floor of two rooms, as she was worried any wee might damage the flooring (she rented). I thought it was a great idea and I wouldn't hesitate to try that myself if I felt it was needed.

Ive just ordered Bubblegum, Lemon, Orange and Cinnamon.
I love those scents....or flavours as my daughter said

Sainsburys were doing a special offer on bio caps with essential oils (might have been bold) a while ago. Anyway I thought they would be good for cleaning the floors but they left horrible greasy marks everywhere!

Toffeecrisp I'm another mistral odourfresh fan for the garden :)
