Hi everyone,
Just an update on Sonny and a little moan!
sonny has been doing really well on his raw food diet. Chicken wings, fish eggs, oxtail, etc.etc. he loves them all. Whilst I am quite happy with his diet I'm getting a little tired of the 'critisism' and the implication from people that we talk to about his diet, that we are totally crazy for giving him raw bones and we don't know what we are doing!
He does have some Burns dry food occassionally mixed with a little sardine too.
It's very frustrating to hear the conflicting opinions and you do have to be really firm in what you believe is right for your dog to stick to the raw diet. I must admit, there are times when I think how much 'easier it would be to put Sonny on dry food and maybe I am risking it giving him chicken wings...' but I really do believe that raw is better for Sonny.
Anyone else have this problem?
ruth
Hi Ruth, I`m sure most of us who feed raw have had the same problem but you have to do what you believe is right.

Ruth ...smile sweetly and agree with everything they say ...then go away and carry on with what you are doing ;)
I had this with a little old lasy , berating me about having a halti on Hudson .....I let her go on and on ..I just smiled and agreed with her ..she was happy and so was I ..I still walk him with a dogmatic :D

Just ignore them or try to educate them if possible.

Thanks Melody,
Good advice from you all - I guess we all have to be tolerant of eachothers view. If Sonny stays happy and well then we stay happy. that's all that matters really
Ruth

hi,
i am a vet nurse and give my dogs raw, imagine the flack i get! everyone i work with is convinced my dogs are going to die a horrible death due to their diet and are convinced hills is the far better from them.

Hi Kelly.
Gosh - you're brave!!
We tried Sonny on Hill's on the vets recommendation. He had a dreadful tummy. In fact, that's why I started him on raw food. For the first two weeks we had him, he had awful diaorreah with blood too and I was cooking up chicken and rice everyday. After a while of this we tried Chappie which was better but produced bulky, smelly poos. I put down some minced chicken for him (raw) to try and he never looked back. No more runny tummys - not for the past six weeks. Early days, I know.
I do try to get the ratio right as I know that too much meat can be quite bad for them but he eats a good, varied diet.
Ruth

hi ruth,
i have had major probs with both of mine on hills, suited neither dog. my oldest has a very mild epi, but since switching on to raw, no more runny poops and he seems much brighter and happier, also does not seem to need his enzymes, guess cos the raw food is much easier on his system to digest. the youngest also had problems with runny poops when on kibble but no more on raw! our new pup which i pick up very soon will also be changed over to raw. the last practice i worked at was very much a big hills fan and freaked if they knew i was feeding them anything else, the practice i am at at the moment has a homeopathic vet who visits very infrequently who feeds raw, i keep trying to catch her when she visits as i am dying to have a chat with a vet who actually understands and feeds raw. good luck with sonny, hope he continues to do well

I don't see that you have to take any notice of them, just point to the dog and say there it is, fit, well and thriving. By the way it cuts both ways if you feed a complete food there will be those who will say you are feeding every toxin known to man ;):)

Raws a lot cheaper too, i have just been to a meat supplier ,where i got 50pound of meat, including tripe, chicken necks, minced chicken and minced beef all for £10 , have to say regardless of the price there is no way i would ever go back to kibble.

Tradel,
Who's your meat supplier?! That's an incredibley good price. I get my bones and chicken wings from out local butcher but he's reluctant to supply much else. The meat I get from a local pet store who stocks meat from AMP.

Hi Ruth ,name of supplier is ALBION MEATS,based in oldbury, west midlands, they will deliver, but there is a minimum weight of 150pounds,ok if your freezer is big enough, if you collect you take as much or as little as you like, and its cheaper as no delivery charge,if you want a price list ,TEL,0121 553 5956.

How far do they deliver? Do you think they would come to Scotland or would that be a bridge and a few hundred miles too far? The thought of these prices makes me feel quite light headed!!!!
Yours in hopeful anticipation

Hi everyone,
I live in East Sussex and managed to place an order yesterday for delivery in Jan. I guess I must be lucky as there's a store locally that they deliver to anyway but somehow the store doesn't seem to stock a huge range of products. I have discovered that Sonny doesn't like tripe - must be the only dog on this site that doesn't. Can't say I'm too upset though - it REALLY smells:):)

I have found my local wholsale butchers to be an excellent source of fresh raw meat for my dogs. Fresh green tripe is 44p per kilo and human grade quality chicken wings 66p per kilo. They also do packs of turkey giblets for 20p a time which include the neck, liver, kidney and heart which my dogs also love.
I must admit when I first changed to feeding raw around 8 months ago now I thought it would probably be more expensive but as others have mentioned I find it cheaper than a good complete.

I found raw expensive too until I shopped around.
I got 4 huge boxes of meat 2 days ago form my butcher which included 16 whole chicken ,4 turkey carcasses, marrow bones{gave them to my mums dogs!}1 huge box of corn fed chicken carcasses and loads of other bits and bobs the whole lot must have weighed in excess of70lb all for £6
A very merry xmas to my butcher :) :) :)
all except the whole chickens were as fresh as can be, the chickens not as fresh but OK.
the worst thing is no space in my 2 and my mums freezers now for xmas !!!! :( :(

Just saying Hi to everyone and have a happy christmas and a peaceful new year.
Thanks for all the replies for Sunny - he's doing great and I feel a lot more relaxed about his diet.
