Hi. I have heard different wayes how to figure out whelpingday and I am a bit confused. Champdogpeople, do you count 63 days from mating, day of LHsurge or ovulationday?
Thankfull for answers

63 days from mating, but take into account it could be 63 days from the first or last mating if you do more than one.  Also keep in mind many breeds often don't go the full 63 days, so it would be worth asking someone in your breed if they're a breed that tends to go early.

Whelping day is an average of 63 days from mating.

I was told 63 days from ovulation day (if you know it).  The bitch won't goa day over this day, some might disagree but this is what I've been taught.

I also understood it to be 63 days from ovulation date.

63 days from day of first mating here.  Although mine don't usually go full term.  I have always counted from day of first tie.

To be correct, it is 63 days from ovulation.  Normally breeders take it from first mating, as unless they have prog tested their bitch they don't know the actual ovulation day.

. Thanks evebody for the answers. We had progesterontest taken. On friday 10/9 it was  3,7 ng or aproximatly 12 nml so she probably ovulated on Saturday 11/9. first mating was on monday 13/9. Second mating the day after and progesterontest that day, showed 16,4ng ( ap. 52,5 nml) So should I count from ovulationday (because we are pretty shoure it was on Saturday) or from matingday? Oh it is så difficult!!!

I would go from the ovulation date.

With our present litter, we didn't have her progesterone tested, but instead relied on my male to let us know she was ready (Friday evening the first signs)... and we went to the stud on the Sunday. One mating later, she produced a good sized litter early on Saturday morning exactly 63 days after ovulation (presuming the start of her ovulating was on the Friday evening, she actually went into the first stages of labour on the Friday evening, whelped pups early Saturday morning).

Can be very hard to calculate if you go on matings, especially if you have two or more... although I understand this is the traditional way of calculating whelping date.

Pregnancy length in dogs is remarkably consistent, being 64-66 days from the preovulatory LH surge to parturition in nearly all instances. .........
Ovulation occurs spontaneously about 2-2.5 days after the preovulatory LH surge........
Oocytes are ovulated as immature primary oocytes, and become mature after a 2 or 3-day period in the oviducts (uterine tubes). Following oocyte maturation, bitches remain fertile for 2-4 days, or longer
