Does anyone have experience of the contraceptive implant in dogs. It is currently unlisenced but available and is implanted in the underbelly of the bitch and lasts two years. My vet uses on his bitches but wondered if anyone else has tried it and if so how they found it?

With bitches it is fairly easy to control their reproduction as they only have seasons months apart.

I would never use anything on either a dog or bitch if they were to be used for breeding at any point, in case if damaged their reproductive capacity.

If they were not to be used for breeding they would be managed or neutered.

I know I have given in though and kept a dog pup (running him on if the kids ask :) and wondered if I should have the implant to make it easier to keep both sexes together.I do worry though about future fertility so may just have to think of other solutions

Personally I would use the implant for the male (can't remember what it's called) pup, then your not risking the fertility of your line, and can use the best males on your bitches.

The fertility of your male as a breeder is not as crucial, as you won;t be using him yourself (too close), so it is only the likelihood or not of others wanting to use him.

I have used it on my then 9 yr old male who is now infertile, implant was done almost 2 yrs ago.  His personality changes were not good, they go thru a period of increased testosterone levels, we had to use tardak, twice before his urges started to dwindle.

Our problem is his aggraphobia since the implant started to take affect, I still have to force him out of his cage, if I leave him on the yard within 10 mins he's digging the door down to go back in and not just in the house into his cage. Its my one regret but as he had developed an enlarged prostrate there wasn't a lot of choice about it but do feel bad about his less than happy existance he's experienced since, feel I've let him down.

I don't keep males, but if you do a site search there are several posters who reported positive experiences.
