Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Taking pregnant bitch away for the night - concerns

Help, i'm in a dilemma and want your opinions.  My in-laws have invited us to stay in the caravan they have booked in Yarmouth for a night in the middle of Oct.  Megan will be about 49 days pregnant by then and i'm not sure wether to go or not.  I won't leave her with someone else so she will have to come with me, but i'm concerned about the 3hr travel in a crate, being in a strange place, what do i do if they want to go out, i'm sure by then she's not gonna want to walk about for hours and it's not gonna be very comfy in her travel bag.  I just don't know what to do for the best, do i tell my partner that i should stay home just in case, do i take megan but make sure everyone knows that i won't be going out for hours on end.  My partner has said before we go we should find the local vet and have their number ready just in case.  Don't want to let everyone down, but Megan is my priority.  On the flipside, am i just being ridiculous and worrying about nothing

Thanks for reading, opinions all welcome.

I suppose it comes down to how well Megan travels and how she is in strange places, if it were me I would be sitting this trip out and staying home with her.

Well normally she sleeps in her crate, strapped in between the two kids in the back (they both have to sit next to her for my sanity), so the travel isn't the biggest concern. It's what do i do with her when i get there. She's not gonna want to do much i don't suppose, but the in laws will want to go to the beach for a walk for sure.  Will walking on the sand put a strain on muscles that she wouldn't normally use too much.  You know how your calves ache sometimes when you've been walking on sand.  OMG this night out is causing me to think about every tiny detail, i think i'm with you and may sit this one out.

Could you get her a doggy pushchair.

The trip might stress her out though, so maybe give it a miss, your the best person to judge how she'll react.  She's not that far off whelping and could go into labour.  Don't know if they can still absorb at this late stage.

She'll only be 49 days - that's way off whelping. If she's used to travelling then that won't stress her, and you and she can just potter about on the beach, not go for an energetic hike. She does need to keep up her exercise to be fit enough to whelp easily.

I'm just thinking that this small breed can go 'early'.  but do think she might like the change of scenery.  She could always stay at the caravan.

If she gets tired she can be carried.

If she is a sociable little soul used to being included in trips etc then go.

Pregnancy is not a disease, so treat as normal and be guided by what she feels like doing excersise wise.

If she travels well then a weekend away with a walk on the beach sounds great!

Yeah she comes everywhere with me, she loves the school trips cause she gets loads of fuss and when she comes into the pet shop it takes me twice as long.  She does bark at other dogs though which is my only concern (not that her bark is loud - it's a bit pathetic if i'm honest bless her little heart)
I have got a dog bag that i can carry her in if she needs to sleep while we're out, but i don't tend to use it much because people look at me like i'm a crazy dog lady, or Paris Hilton (neither of which are particularly nice).  I had one embarrassing episode where i carried her to the school in her bag and when we went past some people walking their labradors, my BAG started yapping.

I guess i should just be led by her and play it by ear.

I love this forum

If she's happy with going away then I can't see why not, just some gentle exercise and it wouldn't hurt to have the local vet's number. If she worries in a strange place, I wouldn't risk it. Thanks to my girl coming in season a month early and all the holidays being booked, and me not wanting to wait another 7 months as she'd already missed once, my girl had to go to her usual dogsitter at around that time of her pregnancy, there was no trouble at all.
