I have just finished an online subscription with Our Dogs.  I have found that I only tended to check the critiques rather than read the articles as I found the format not as easy to read as a paper version.  Also I couldn't take it with me (love having 5 mins in the car reading while waiting for the children to come out of school), now I have looked at Dog World as well.  What I would love to know is which paper you all prefer and whether you prefer the on line version better than the paper.  There is a huge difference in price between the two versions!

I have bought the paper version from the newsagent for the last 2 two weeks and have read these from cover to cover.

What do you all prefer and why?

I get both - purely to avoid missing critiques - I have a subscription to DW which includes online as well as the paper version delivered.  Our Dogs I just get the paper only - I do prefer flicking through and find it incredibly difficult reading online!

I prefer the layout of the critique reports in Our Dogs - alphabetically by show - so much easier to find plus OD also does 2nd place for open shows if the judge has submitted one and doesn't edit the critiques which I know DW does!

DW is far better for articles and news in my opinion but you cannot beat OD for show reports and above all breed notes -the breed notes in DW aren't even worth glancing at as they hardly allow anything in at all. (And for one of my breeds there haven't even been any notes for almost 2 years.) I.e. I could never do without both.

As my interest is the critiques and forthcoming shows I much prefer Our Dogs which I read on line, used to buy Dog World as well but cancelled it about a year ago because it seemed I was spending more than my fair share of the domestic money pool. I am with luck having a new puppy next year so I am start buying Dog World again in the paper form in order to save them for the puppy pen.

About 10 years ago I subcribed to both but stopped & get DW but I think OD probably are quicker to get the critiques plus they dont seem to cut them about. I will probably stick with DW though...more habit than anything.

Thanks for the replies.  I think that I will take the paper subscription, and buy DW as and when I fancy it.  Just another question.

with the postal subscription, does it arrive on time. I would hate to subscribe and then see it in the newsagents, but not have it.  I know that I would buy it there and then.  It would be lovelly for it to arrive with the post and I wouldn't have to leave the house!

9 times out of 10, mine comes on Thursday via post.

I have had DW today :)

I have always taken dog world both when we showed years ago and again when we started again recently. I also had Our dogs on line for a while. I do prefer dog world though and with the subscription it always arrives in the Thursday post.

Online you get to see our dogs usually on the tuesday sometimes wednesday, dogs world is online by wednesday.
- By rachelsetters Date 30.09.10 19:16 UTC
You automatically get the online with the paper subscription and that is available on Wednesday noon and the paper arrives 99% on time Thursday.

never bought papers i cant stand mess but i know id cut out all JS critiques and that would then annoy me so best i stick to online sub, but even so i prefer our dogs for critiques and dog worlds news is better but they edit the critiques to much.

Where do you recon I can get DW as a paper, my parents used to get it delivered but stopped a few months ago and I wanted to read a few critiques but might not want every week I do look online but do like the paper version. I did ask at WHSmiths by my flat but they had no idea what I was talking about.
- By rachelsetters Date 01.10.10 05:32 UTC
Before I had a subscription I just asked at my local newsagents for them to get the paers in for me.  WH Smiths usually do stock DW so that's odd they didn't know - possibly you just asked the wrong person!

Just go to you local newsagent and ask if the would get Dog World for you weekly for you to collect.

I have Our Dog on-line and Dog World in the flesh.  Really ought to stop one but I like both and can't make decision.  I like being able to search for critiques on line.  Saves all the leg work looking through every show.

Can anyone tell me whether you can search critiques (back numbers) for particular dogs on line with Dog World?  The Our Dog has the facility to put in a dogs name and get all the results back?!
- By suejaw Date 01.10.10 08:25 UTC
I think you need a large WHSmiths to stock that paper, only the big city centre one does so round here.
My local newsagents stocks DW, they used to do OD but for some reason stopped.

I'm thinking of paying a subscription, but what I really want to do is cut out the critiques. Its great online, but in the paper I can cut them out and put them in a book for the dogs, not the same printing it from online.

Rachel, would you be interested if I purchased one paper and you keep on with the other and we swap over?? Lol then we can have access to both?
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 01.10.10 11:09 UTC
I have only just looked at the online version & find it hard to read, keep scrolling left, right, up & down, zooming in & out to turn the page. Much prefer the paper version.
- By roynrumble Date 01.10.10 12:14 UTC
i get dog world the paper version but all champ show critiques for my breed are also put on the parent breed club website, which is very handy as they tend to appear there b4 the paper one comes out.must admit, because of this i have debated whether i need the dog world..

Many of the breed notes in Dog World are incredibly boring as they only relay show results which we already know anyway. Some try to be more interesting & chatty but it seems that the breeds that I am particularly interested in (Goldens & Newfs) have nothing in their lives except shows. D.W. recently also seems to be featuring pages of photos of people at the shows: hardly a dog in sight. Do I really want to see the Bannerdown Team or the Highams Team or the Dinner Ladies, however nice they may be? Actually, there are some of us who read the dog press but are not fixated on showing. There are other aspects to owning dogs.

G.Rets ~ both the weekly dog papers are spercificly(sp?) aimed at the dog showing fraterntiy, so you will get mainly showing in it.

Prefer DW bought it for many years.  I used to get OD but found it boring.  Never seen DW at WHSmiths but they always have OD.
- By pavlova [gb] Date 02.10.10 16:14 UTC
You can usually pick up dpg world in Tesco.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 02.10.10 17:55 UTC
Never seen it in any Tesco's I've been to.  Wonder if it's only certain parts of the country?  OD is a north west company so maybe that's why they are in WHSmiths around here and not DW.

Personally, I've always found that Dog World is a far more professional publication. The news items are accurate and appear far sooner than the same stories in ODs. The championship show coverage is to a far better standard and is far far more comprehensive. In this week's ODs the details given under the photographs taken at Belfast are almost all incorrect. An English Springer Spaniel is labelled as a Flatcoat Retriever - the staff at ODs don't seem to know the difference from one breed to another!
DW is far better value for money and when on subscription arrives almost 100% of the time on a Thursday. The website is easy to navigate and you have the opportunity to post comments on stories, features and your own breed notes.
The OD website is a total nightmare - the messageboard is seldom used - which it even admits itself.
ODs content is ungrammatical and very difficult to read as it is riddled with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors - I think it comes across as so amateur and unprofessional.
The vast majority of dog people in the UK don't want pages & pages entirely devoted to overseas shows.
