When I decided to make pilchard cake on Saturday I discovered I had bought pilchards in brine by mistake.  I have now been to get tins of pilchards in tomato sauce which is what I usually use.  Can I rinse and use the ones in brine to give to my dog or shall I just throw them away.  I definitely don't want to eat them!

One of our friends uses Pilchards in Brine, its not something id use personally but Id just give them a rinse and feed to the dogs anyway, as they say wast not want not.

I'd prefer not to waste food but not sure if the salt content is too high. I only have 2 tins so not a huge amount.

I'd use them, just rinse them before feeding. The tom sauce ones prob have a fair amount of sugar/salt in too, so I don't think therer is much difference. :)

I'm fairly sure someone on here once did a comparison on sardines and found that the difference between the salt content of brine and vegetable oil was negligible.

I wouldn't even bother rinsing them as it's only one meal/treat in thousands!! 

I do rinse mine as they get tinned fish once or twice a week. :)

Don't think that was me, but I once did a comparison with Tuna (brine/springwater/oil) on another forum and came to the same conclusion.

If it's not a major part of your dog's diet, and not fed every day, then the salt levels won't make a lot of difference. Raw meat is naturally high in sodium and carnivores are adapted to that.
